Telecommunications politics : ownership and control of the information highway in developing countries by Bella Mody( Book )

13 editions published between 1995 and 2012 in English and held by 383 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume brings together scholars and policymakers to address the issue of telecommunications policy in developing countries. It elaborates on the position that economics and technology determine the framework for discussion, but politics makes the decision. Politics, in this case, refers to the dynamics of the power structure generated by the historical and contemporary context of state, social, economic, and cultural forces. The chapter authors address the system of information transportation -- the telecommunications sector in developing countries ranging from low-income countries with o
The geopolitics of representation in foreign news : explaining Darfur by Bella Mody( Book )

7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This inductive study investigates the 'curricula' of ten different news organizations from seven different countries that produced news in four languages on the Darfur uprising in Western Sudan: the New York Times, the Washington Post, France's Le Monde, the UK's Guardian, BBC.co.uk, Egypt's Al-Ahram, South Africa's Mail & Guardian Online, English. AlJazeera.Net, and China's People's Daily and China Daily. Mody and her collaborators show how news organizations uniquely and strategically constructed a foreign event for a particular intended audience based on national historical solidarity with global North or South power blocs, current national interest in the country, ownership of the news organization, and the political-linguistic constituency of the intended audience. While previous research on the role of national interest and ownership are supported in this study, the influence of the intended audience (namely, foreign or domestic) on the design of news is a new contribution to the field. Conceptualizing foreign news as perhaps the only means of cross-national, continuing education, Mody uses comprehensiveness as an evaluative measure of news."--Provided by publisher

Underreported Stories on Climate Change and Coral Reefs in These Times of Diminishing International Reporting: Mining the Scholarly Literature Through Regular Annotated Bibliographies by Lucy A Higgins( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The goal of this project is to explore solutions to the increasingly difficult challenge of covering international environmental topics, such as coral reefs and climate change, during times of constrained budgets, shrinking environmental reporting, and disappearing foreign news bureaus. In this context of limited resources, this study explores whether the periodic bibliographic review of scholarly literature may offer a low-expense avenue for news organizations to sustain or even increase the breadth and depth of coverage of these important topics. This study compares coverage of coral reefs and climate change in scholarly journal articles (2007--2011) to those in the popular press (2007--2012) using the New York Times (NYTimes) as an exemplar of the latter. The extra year in the latter was to allow for a possible time lag in information moving from the scholarly literature to the popular press. Articles on coral reefs and climate change identified in the scholarly literature (239) revealed numerous possibilities for stories that were not covered in the 22 annotated articles on this topic that appeared in the NYTimes. Whereas the most frequently discussed topics in the scholarly literature were the relationship between herbivorous fish and coral health, sea surface temperatures (SST), coral bleaching, and the resilience, recovery, and acclimation processes of coral reef ecosystems, the NYTimes's articles focused on conservation, tourism, SST, and broad discussion of climate change and how it might affect coral reef ecosystems. Additionally, of the 22 NYTimes articles on coral reefs and climate change, only three (14%) included hyperlinks to scholarly articles and 12 (55%) included at least one scientific reference. Overall, this study demonstrates that during these times of declining resources for on-the-spot reporting, scholarly literature represents an affordable but currently underutilized means for news organizations to continue providing wide ranging and detailed coverage of international environmental issues

ICTs and Burma: A contextual analysis by Brett Roderick Labbe( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Researchers have conceptualized the relationship between power and technology in both utopian and dystopian ways over time. Dystopian theorists have tended to concentrate on the political economy of unequal living conditions, contending they will inevitably inhibit technological innovation and merely serve to perpetuate existing inequalities. Alternatively, utopian perspectives tend to take a technologically deterministic stance, maintaining that new technologies are inherently democratic in nature and will inevitably liberate citizens worldwide from the tyranny of authoritarian rule. This paper will explore how contextual forces in Burma affect various dimensions of ICTs (namely the Internet and mobile phones) to help shape Burmese society. To do so, data regarding ICT use in Burma were collected and analyzed through a review of official government documents, NGO reports, academic journals, books, and newspaper articles
Contextual Analysis of the Decision To Adopt a Regional Satellite System The Case of the Andean CONDOR by Leonardo Ferreira( Book )

2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Acknowledging the importance of communications in economic development, this paper discusses the rationale behind the decision of the Andean Pact nations of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela to develop a regional satellite communication system to be known as CONDOR. The application of contextual theorizing to the decision-making process is illustrated through a reconstruction of the environment in which the decisions took place, and factors that influenced the process are identified. It is noted that the sources of data used included primary documents from the Andean Pact countries, minutes of board meetings on the project, minutes of Andean Pact ministers of communication meetings, interviews with senior government officials of the Colombian ministry of communications, and feasibility studies commissioned by the Pact nations. Discussions of the major factors that influenced the decision-making process consider the geographical situation of the five countries, national sovereignty, and geopolitics, i.e., the desire to be independent of extraregional communications organizations. Student civic engagement with humanitarian disasters: collaborative cross-national research on Darfur reporting( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This article documents student participation in journalism research as a means of both teaching about civic issues and promoting more comprehensive coverage of humanitarian crises. Students at the University of Colorado, Boulder participated in an inductive study of how the Darfur crisis was covered from 2003-2005 by ten different news organizations in seven different countries. Though student papers were revised and expanded before publication in The Geopolitics of Representation in Foreign News: Explaining Darfur1, the project enabled hands-on learning about research design, the geopolitical contexts in which news about Darfur was created, and the construction of foreign news in general
