Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz( )

8 editions published in 2006 in French and held by 407 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Berlioz's opera about the legendary hot-blooded Florentine sculptor and goldsmith is a rarity. But under James Levine's masterful conducting the huge and complex score dazzles like one of Cellini's artworks. Marcello Giordani is Benventuo Cellini, who must finish a statue of Perseus for Pope Clement (Robert Lloyd) by nightfall or be hanged as a murderer and rapist. Against all the odds, including the conniving of his vicious rival Fieramosca (Peter Coleman-Wright), Cellini's artistry triumphs, and he can finally be with the woman he loves, Teresa (Isabel Bayrakdarian)

From the dark, mysterious beginning in the depths of the Rhine River to the blazing end as the gods cross the rainbow bridge into their new home of Valhalla, this is a searing performance. James Morris is the commanding Wotan, the god who thinks he has everything under control, even as he unwittingly sows the seeds of his own destruction

With Paroli (originally entitled Frau Denise), a variation on the Figaro theme of the amorous misadventures of a duped, married nobleman set near Paris during the late 18th c., Leo Fall (1873-1925) succeeded in producing a captivating one-act chamber play that was neither operetta nor opera even though it does have its share of reminiscences of fairy-tale operas, stylistic quotations of the rococo, discreet leitmotivic technique, and polished ensemble pieces. A prodigious operetta composer, Leo Fall was considered a true rival to Franz Lehár at the turn of the 20th century
