Munch : in his own words by Poul Erik Tøjner( Book )

21 editions published between 2000 and 2003 in 3 languages and held by 697 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this new book Munch's own soul is laid bare through the translation and analysis of diaries, literary sketches and letters which have never before been published in the English language. Preserved in the archives of the Munch Museum in Oslo to whom they were presented by the artist himself, these writings give a unique insight into one of the most fascinating artistic minds of the twentieth century. Munch was as influenced by the literary and philosophical context of turn-of-the-century Europe as he was by his artistic milieu, and by his own admission, several of his major works started life as literary sketches." "Beautifully illustrated with drawings, paintings, and contemporary photography, this book presents an intimate portrait of the artist's life - the early death of his mother, his childhood illnesses, his tragic love affair - through his own philosophical and literary representation of it. Interweaving Munch's artistic and literary experiences these texts provide a commentary on the artist's works, on his own personal philosophy, on the work of contemporaries (Van Gogh among others), and on the sensibilities of his friends and family. Expertly contextualised by Poul Erik Tojner Munch: In His Own Words brings the world of the artist vividly to life."--Jacket

Cézanne & Giacometti : paths of doubt by Paul Cézanne( Book )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 233 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) has been the artist's artist of choice for more than a century now, and there seems to be no end to the inspirational forces embedded within his work. Despite the sixty-two years separating their births, it is almost impossible to avoid drawing comparisons between the lives and works of Cezanne and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Both men began with a violent period of creation, focusing on sex and struggle until a decisive creative shift meant that they instead devoted themselves to the task of realistic representation. Even in his works which seem stylistically unrelated, Giacometti made frequent allusions to the master from Aix." "With essays by Felix A. Baumann, Tobia Bezzola, Inken Freudenberg, Donat Rutimann, Poul Erik Tojner, and Veronique Wiesinger, this publication closely examines the development of this affiliation, revealing how an appreciation of Giacometti's work can shed new light on Cezanne's artistic achievements and exploring the possibility that - in spite of chronological complications - this relationship was one that benefited both artists."--Jacket

Tara Donovan by Tara Donovan( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in German and English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Renowned American artist Tara Donovan (born 1969) creates sculptural objects of enigmatic beauty by utilizing and experimenting with simple, everyday objects such as Scotch tape, drinking straws, paper plates, needles, plastic rods, toothpicks, mylar and buttons. At first these abstract objects resemble enlarged cellular structures, or living organisms from the depths of the ocean. "What I'm striving for is to be an alchemist and transcend the material," Donovan says. "It's more of a mimicking of the way of nature, the way things actually grow." Her method is also allied to an American Minimalist sculptural tradition that includes artists such as Sol LeWitt, Robert Irwin and James Turrell. This volume presents eight works made between 2004 and 2012, as installed at the Arp Museum in Germany and the Louisiana. 0Exhibition: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark (February 8 - July 28 2013) / Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, Remagen, Germany (29.9.2013-16.3.2014)

Skrik : historien om et bilde by Poul Erik Tøjner( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in Norwegian and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
