Handling complexity in learning environments : theory and research by Jan Elen( Book )

9 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 184 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What do we mean when we say that "learning environments are increasingly complex"? What do we know about the cognitive processing that occurs during complex learning? How can we provide effective instructional support for students who must learn and apply complex knowledge? These questions, and related issues, have fascinated educators and educational researchers for many years and are they are the focus of this book. As a tribute to Joost Lowyck, professor educational technology at the K.U. Leuven, eminent scholars from around the globe have contributed to a far reaching analysis of complexity in learning environments from a cognitive perspective. The chapter authors summarize what we know now about complexity and make specific suggestions for educational practice and for future research on complexity. The different contributions in the several chapters discuss theoretical accounts and empirical findings about learning, the learner, and learning environments. Wide-ranging topics include current descriptions of our cognitive architecture, new contributions to cognitive load theory, research and evaluation design considerations, motivation to learn, the influence of prior knowledge, the use of simulations and multimedia, alternative instructional methods and interventions, studies of the classroom context for complex learning and mental model-building

Designing environments for constructive learning [proceedings of the Nato Advanced Research Workshop on the Design of Constructivist Learning Environments: Implications for Instructional Design and the Use of Technology, held at the Catholic University Leuven, Belgium, May 14 - 18, 1991] by Thomas M Duffy( )

9 editions published between 1993 and 2012 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book focuses on constructivist pedagogy and the implications of that pedagogy for the principles and strategies of instructional design and for the use of technology in instruction. A constructivist pedagogy emphasizes the "situatedness" of learning. There is always a reason for learning; learning is a tool for accomplishing something else. Our understanding of a concept is based on the context in which it is experienced. Most importantly, that context involves the larger framework orpurpose for engaging in a task. In the first half of this book the authors describe constructivist learning environments and the particular theoretical framework in which they are embedded. The second half of the book focuses on instructional design principles to bederived from constructivism, the implications for the practice of instructional design, including principles for design, and the practical issues of implementing constructivist learning environments

European Research on Corporate Training by Joost Lowyck( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The state of corporate training research conducted by education departments at universities throughout Europe was examined. The study, which was based on a literature search and limited survey, focused on research concerned with the design, development, and evaluation of training and research on learning processes in corporate settings. Among the review's main findings were the following: (1) studies of the relationship between educational level and employment are conducted at the supranational level by the European Centre for Vocational Training and are often conducted at the national or regional levels; (2) at the organization level, most studies focus on describing/analyzing important determinants of training decisions within organizations; (3) some researchers concentrate on specific learning programs or type of programs; (4) only a limited number of researchers examine learners and learning in corporate settings; (5) studies conducted in the design phase of training generally elaborate procedures for designing instruction and/or describe the variables affecting the design process; (6) the development/delivery phase of training has received much attention, whereas evaluation of training is barely studied; and (7) most studies are descriptive, and only a few test specific interventions. (Appended is a list of 40 European corporate training researchers' affiliations/addresses). Contains 37 references. (Mn)
Research on Media in Western Europe A Myth of Sisyphus? by Joost Lowyck( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Main trends in media research in Western Europe are identified, with emphasis on three successive stages since 1960: tools technology, systems technology, and reflective technology. Previously, the third stage has not been well elaborated, a statement supported by an analysis of the content and context of European media. A critical appraisal of the present state of the art reveals the lack of a fundamental and theory-based approach in past investigations, which underscores the need for an integration of media studies in current cognitive research on learning and instruction. Work at the University of Leuven serves as an illustration of the growing tendency to design and study educationally relevant and theory-based learning environments that fit into the school curriculum, and in which detailed data are collected on students' learning and problem solving. A six-page bibliography is provided. (KM)
Teacher Thinking A Critical Analysis of Four Studies by Joost Lowyck( Book )

2 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper reviews critically four studies on teacher thinking as conducted at the Center for Instructional Psychology, University of Leuven, Belgium. The four empirical studies were: (1) a process analysis of teaching; (2) subjective problems of student teachers while teaching; (3) context variables during lesson planning; and (4) post-interactive reflections of teachers. The critiques present discussions on the following elements of the studies: (1) data from the literature; (2) data from the descriptive-empirical research; (3) research methodology used in the study; and (4) results. Included in the discussion are analyses of the cognitive processes of teachers in the pre-active (planning) phase, the interactive phase; and the post-interactive phase of teaching a unit of study. A discussion is presented of results of the four studies grouped into categories: (1) substantial results; (2) methodological questions; and (3) theoretical value of the studies. Seven pages of references are included. (JD)
