William "Bootsy" Collins was already a veteran of James Brown's band when he hooked up with George Clinton's Parliafunkadelicment thang in the early '70s. His outsize personality and preternatural good nature made him an obvious choice when Clinton came up with the idea of reaching for the preteen audience ("geepies") with a comic-book-style character; thus was born Bootsy's Rubber Band. Thumping tracks and Collins's stoned-sounding mumblings made the whole thing irresistible. Back in the Day collects many of the high points among the man's statements of purpose ("The Pinocchio Theory") and seduction moves ("Hollywood Squares")
