Psychoeducational assessment of students who are deaf-blind : a decision-making model for school-based practitioners : final report by Harvey Haynes Mar( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This final report describes the activities and outcomes of a project designed to develop and establish a psychoeducational assessment model to enhance the ability of educators, psychologists, and learning specialists to design and conduct meaningful evaluations of students who are deaf-blind. By focusing on psychoeducational assessment, this project sought to address several longstanding concerns, including the absence of uniform guidelines for evaluation, the lack of field-based training materials and resources on the process of assessment, the shortage of evaluation personnel who are familiar with specific issues of deaf-blindness, and the problem of accurately characterizing the abilities and growth of individuals for whom standard models and techniques of assessment are likely to be inappropriate. Major outcomes of the project included the development of: (1) a pragmatic model of psychoeducational assessment for school-based practitioners working in diverse settings, including a process to assist state and multi-state projects to implement "train-the-trainer" models of personnel preparation; (2) materials and resources to support self-study or inservice models of personnel preparation; and (3) a communication assessment protocol to improve competencies of practitioners to describe communication and social interaction behaviors of students with deaf-blindness. Technological resources for students with deaf-blindness and severe disabilities by Nancy Sall( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This resource manual provides information on adaptive technology for students with deaf-blindness and severe disabilities. The material is based on a project that sought to identify specific applications that support the acquisition of early communication and social interaction skills. The first section describes 20 computer software programs and adaptations, both commercial and public domain, that can facilitate the use of microcomputers by students with deaf-blindness and severe disabilities. Each review includes: information on the publisher, purposes, possible modifications, and a ranking of the "user-friendly features" of the program; additional rank-ordered information on the range of programs, graphics, options, and reinforcers; and a vignette describing how the program was adapted for and used by a student. The second section consists of resource lists of peripheral equipment and adaptive devices, commercially available software for Apple II computers, public domain software, resources for public domain software, hardware and software warehouses, technology resources, publications, and bulletin boards and user groups. The final section presents annotated bibliographies addressing adaptive technology in general; microcomputer technology in the classroom; technology and augmentative communication; and microcomputers, switch access, and environmental control. Availability and accessibility of information in the semantic memory of retarded and nonretarded adolescents by Laraine Masters Glidden( Book )

3 editions published between 1977 and 1978 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The availability of semantic information in storage and the accessibility of that information for retrieval was studied with 40 retarded and 40 nonretarded adolescents. In Experiment I, Ss were required to retrieve information from semantic categories, as well as judge whether specific items were members of a given category. Results showed that retarded Ss retrieved only about 60% of the total number of items retrieved by nonretarded Ss, a difference which could not be wholly accounted for by the items available in storage. Experiment 2 was designed to remediate this retrieval deficit by introducing an organized retrieval plan consisting of subcategory cues. The organization facilitated retrieval as long as it was experimentally provided. Retrieval returned to its original level, however, when the cues were withdrawn. It was concluded that retarded individuals had an accessibility deficit in addition to an availability deficit; one aspect of this assessibility deficit involved the failure to spontaneously use mnemonic strategies that were consistent with the semantic organization.
