"The career of R. J. S. Stevens, organist and composer, spanned the late Baroque and early Romanticism. He was born in 1757 and trained as a choirboy; at the age of eleven he was apprenticed to William Savage, Master of the Choristers at St Paul's, who undertook to instruct him in the 'Science of Musick'. At first he pursued a somewhat uncertain career as an organist, teacher and singer, but in 1778 his luck changed when Lord Thurlow, the Lord Chancellor, became his patron. Three years later he was appointed organist of St Michael's, Cornhill, and from then on his success was assured." "Stevens kept copious diaries throughout his life, which must have formed the basis for his Recollections, written in 1827. Among his reminiscences of musical life in London is an account of the Anacreontic Society identifying John Stafford Smith as the composer of the club song, which was eventually to become The Star-Spangled Banner."--BOOK JACKET
