Employment stability in an age of flexibility : evidence from industrialized countries by Peter Auer( )

16 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and Portuguese and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book examines the state of the stable employment relationship in the context of an increasingly precarious labour market. The traditional employment relationship is viewed as having been permanently undermined by mass dismissals and high unemployment, globalization, and technological change are seen as causing an unstoppable rise in precarity and in temporary and part-time jobs. In the face of this common perception of the insecurity of jobs in today's market, the authors put forward convincing evidence that the long-term employment relationship is in fact more resilient than generally thought." "Offering a comparative analysis of employment stability and flexibility in 16 OECD countries, the book examines the type of labour market regulations needed to ensure a balance between employment flexibility and security. The contrasting labour markets and labour market institutions of four countries are studied in detail: Denmark, France, Japan and the United States. These offer examples of possible combinations of different types of employment protection and labour market policy, showing the effects of these various pairings on employment levels, tenure and perceptions of employment security, across age groups, education levels and sex." "The results of the analysis set out in this book have significant implications for employment policy, suggesting as they do that efforts should be concentrated on securing a resilient core of stable employment. The argument is presented that the flexible workers need particular measures of security and protection to ensure that they are not marginalized."--BOOK JACKET
Active labour market policies around the world : coping with the consequences of globalization by Peter Auer( Book )

26 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in English and held by 281 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The second edition of this acclaimed volume has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide an authoritative account of how active labour market policies (ALMPs) can help make globalization work better in the interest of workers around the world. Offering an expanded and current overview of the nature of ALMPs, this new edition gives readers a fresh look at the pitfalls and challenges countries face when evaluating these programmes." "A new chapter on financing reflects today's growing relevance of ALMPs and provides an overall policy framework for designing durable, yet adaptable ALMPs. While putting forth some powerful arguments in favour of these programmes, the book also emphasizes that they should not be used as a "quick-fix" solution. For this reason, it recommends new ways of financing these policies over the long term and examines the importance of social dialogue as a vital policy tool for establishing more permanent frameworks that allow for labour market flexibility while maintaining security in a globalized world."--BOOK JACKET
Changing labour markets in Europe : the role of institutions and policies by Peter Auer( Book )

16 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 281 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study looks primarily at macroeconomic policy, a necessary framework for every labour market, which does much to determine overall employment and unemployment levels. Meeting the employment challenge : Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico in the global economy by Janine Berg( Book )

9 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents extensive evidence in support of placing employment concerns at the center of economic and social policies. The authors discuss the challenges the three countries face in creating employment, as well as the evolution of the labor market since 1990 in terms of the quantity and quality of jobs. They then explore the impact of five policy areas on employment creation: macroeconomic policy, trade liberalization, foreign direct investment, labor market regulation, and labor relations. Their concluding recommendations offer concrete steps for balancing market forces and policy intervention in the interest of employment growth in a sound economy
Employment revival in Europe : labour market success in Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands by Peter Auer( Book )

12 editions published in 2000 in English and French and held by 260 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A review of the remarkable economic and labour market recovery made by four small European countries: Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands. It analyzes their success and highlights the specific factors responsible in particular the promotion of social dialogue and the institution of critical macroeconomic and labour market policies. Based on reports prepared for the European country employment policy reviews (CEPR) as a follow-up to the 1995 World Summit on Social Development, the study covers gender gaps, the sectoral distribution of employment and the shares of people which are dependent on social transfers. While assessing the progress and examining the remaining problems in these four countries, the book compares their progress with that of other EU countries and examines how similar policies and action could help combat unemployment and make progress towards full employment

10 editions published in 2006 in Spanish and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
