Callaway calls this collection "love songs for grownups," because it offers an introspective look at the long road on her way to love that has led her to the fulfillment she has found today. "At Last" is a mix of jazz standards, versatile pop songs and a couple original tunes, each woven together to create a narrative that is perhaps as cinematic as it is musical

Recorded at Fort Athens Studio, Riverside, California. Includes liner notes by Patricia Kannas. MATRIARCH OF THE BLUES was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Sandwiched between trad jazz excursions BLUE GARDENIA and HEART OF A WOMAN came MATRIARCH OF THE BLUES, a millennial outing featuring Etta James unleashing her powerful growl on a wide-ranging mix of soul and rock & roll covers. This outing found a then 62-year old Peaches roaring over a crack band equally at home pumping punchy horns and a slinky groove into the Born Again-era Dylan nugget "Gotta Serve Somebody" and laying down a funky bed for O.V. Wright's tasty "Don't Let My Baby Ride." Not surprisingly, James's strongest moments come on ballads like Ray Charles's gospel-flavored "Come Back Baby" and Ann Peebles's pleading "You're Gonna Make Me Cry." This veteran vocalist easily slips into the swamp-rock pocket of CCR's "Born On The Bayou" and rides herd over a particularly crisp reading of Big Mama Thornton's oft-covered "Hound Dog." Even The Rolling Stones' disco anthem "Miss You" is given an even more lascivious twist by an undulating mid-tempo groove that replaces the dance beat with flamenco-like nuances and luscious sounding horns

Rage to survive : the Etta James story by Etta James( Book )

Here is the intimate - and shockingly candid - story of one of the great women of American music. Considered among the finest soul singers of the rock-'n'-roll era, Etta James tells her mesmerizing tale in a voice uniquely her own - big, bold, and unrepentant. Without a trace of self-pity, the singer describes her chaotic childhood; gospel prodigy at age six, raucous rhythm-and-blues star at sixteen, she exudes a spirit of defiance and daring that has her breaking musical boundaries even as her life falls into disarray. Along with uncensored war stories of early R & B and full-blown portraits of legends like Sam Cooke and Little Richard, Etta James paints a landscape that extends from Watts to Harlem, from South Side Chicago through the badlands of Texas. Her wild world is peopled with an all-star roster of musical geniuses, notorious pimps, and famed record executives. A former heroin addict, she is candid in detailing her dependency on high-priced drugs and wrong-headed men. Her insider's narration of the Golden Age of Soul, when her "Tell Mama" topped the charts, is unsparing
