I ricordi riportano l’uomo alla sua infanzia: Simon Birch è un bambino nato con una malformazione che lo rende affetto da nanismo. I genitori non si occupano di lui perchè delusi da quello che definiscono un piccolo mostro e gli abitanti del paese lo prendono continuamente in giro. Simon non si cura molto di questo perché può contare sull’affetto del suo amico Joe e di sua madre Rebecca, che ha avuto Joe quando frequentava l’ultimo anno di College e che non ha mai voluto dire al figlio chi fosse il padre. Soprattutto, Simon è convinto che Dio ha in serbo un piano per lui e vive aspettando di sapere qual sia la sua missione. Il tempo passa e Rebecca inizia a frequentare Ben Goodrich, un giovane e simpatico insegnante di recitazione, con cui inizialmente Joe non simpatizza. Un giorno, durante una partita di Baseball della squadra della scuola, Simon colpisce inavvertitamente Rebecca alla testa e la donna muore sul colpo. Simon è distrutto dal dispiacere e non osa partecipare al funerale, ma Joe, spinto anche da Ben, lo va a cercare e l’amicizia tra i due rimane integra. Simon ha spesso degli scontri con il reverendo Russell e con Miss Leavey, la sua assistente, per la sua fede poco ortodossa e per il fatto che combina sempre guai, come quando, durante la recita scolastica di Natale, si aggrappa al seno di una compagna di scuola, Marjorie, provocando, senza volerlo, il finimondo. Tuttavia, Joe rifiuta l’idea e quasi non rivolge la parola al sacerdote. Durante il viaggio di ritorno l’autobus ha un incidente e precipita nel lago gelato. Simon riesce a salvare tutti i bambini ma quasi annega nel lago. In ospedale, riesce a dare un ultimo saluto a Joe prima di morire. Joe, adulto, lascia la tomba di Simon e raggiunge suo figlio, al quale ha dato il nome dell’amico morto
