A compendium of medical practice : illustrated by interesting and instructive cases, and by practical, pathological, and physiological
observations by
James Bedingfield(

"This volume forms an epitome of the medical practice of the Bristol Infirmary during the last five years." It includes "interesting and instructive cases" as well as "practical, pathological, and physiological observations." The first chapter begins with "Diseases of the Brain" and from thence ensue in-depth discussions and case histories of everything from gastritis to diabetes to tetanus. Written before germ theory had been developed, but after humanity had achieved the notion that something like germs were possible, this very early medical text often refers to 'animalculae.' These troublemakers were thought to float imperceptibly in the atmosphere and were imagined to be the cause, or at least a contributing factor, in disease. Of ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis), the author writes that "it appears to have its origin in a want of cleanliness; it is however extremely probably that animalculae have a considerable share in its production." This is a fascinating work for anyone interested in both appreciating how far we have come, and in developing perspective and humility regarding how far we have yet to go in our understanding of medicine, disease and the human body
