The theology of illness by Jean-Claude Larchet( Book )

17 editions published between 1990 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jean-Claude Larchet's The Theology of Illness explores biblical and patristic perspectives on sickness and redemptive suffering. The questions Larchet considers are fundamental: the origins of sin in a fallen world, its impact on physical health, and the healing of human nature by the incarnate Son of God. He explains healing as a means of glorifying God, stressing again the crucial role of prayer and sacramental grace in promoting genuine health. When illness plunges us into unfamiliar territory, even to the point of death, Larchet teaches us to marshal spiritual reserves in a society dominated by technology and materialism. In a time when the physician has been dubbed the high priest of the god of Modern Medicine, Larchet encourages us to situate these crucial experiences within the framework of their relationship to the unique reality of the Holy Trinity."--Jacket
On difficulties in Sacred Scripture : the responses to Thalassios by Máximo( Book )

15 editions published between 1992 and 2012 in French and Greek, Ancient and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Maximos the Confessor (ca. 580-662) is now widely recognized as one of the greatest theological thinkers, not simply in the entire canon of Greek patristic literature, but in the Christian tradition as a whole. A peripatetic monk and prolific writer, his penetrating theological vision found expression in an unparalleled synthesis of biblical exegesis, ascetic spirituality, patristic theology, and Greek philosophy, which is as remarkable for its conceptual sophistication as for its labyrinthine style of composition. On Difficulties in Sacred Scripture, presented here for the first time in a complete English translation (including the 465 scholia), contains Maximos's virtuosic theological interpretations of sixty-five difficult passages from the Old and New Testaments. Because of its great length, along with its linguistic and conceptual difficulty, the work as a whole has been largely neglected. Yet alongside the Ambigua to John, On Difficulties in Sacred Scripture: The Responses to Thalassios deserves to be ranked as the Confessor's greatest work and one of the most important patristic treatises on the interpretation of Scripture, combining the interconnected traditions of monastic devotion to the Bible, the biblical exegesis of Origen, the sophisticated symbolic theology of Dionysius the Areopagite, and the rich spiritual anthropology of Greek Christian asceticism inspired by the Cappadocian Fathers"--front flap

28 editions published between 1991 and 2015 in French and Undetermined and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Opuscules théologiques et polémiques by Maximus( Book )

7 editions published in 1998 in French and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Theology of the body by Jean-Claude Larchet( Book )

7 editions published between 2009 and 2017 in French and English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"God formed the human body from the dust of the earth in his image and likeness (Gen 1.26; 2.7), and calls us to become "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Pet 1.4). But in our fallen state, we find ourselves in a different condition, crying out, "Who will deliver me from this body of death?" (Rom 7.24) For this reason, Christ--in whom "the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily" (Col 2.9)--came to save both our souls and our bodies. "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree" (1Pet 2.24). Because of this "creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption ... And not only the creation, but we ourselves ... groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies" (Rom 8.21, 22). Larchet traces the contours of this complex subject using Scripture and the Church Fathers. He situates the meaning and purpose of our bodies in the cosmic drama of salvation, without losing sight of the everyday activities that use and honor--or dishonor--the human body. We are created as an integral whole: body, soul, and spirit. From the ancient Gnostics to contemporary alternative views of the human person, this integrity of the human person has always been challenged. The holistic vision presented in these pages is a timely reminder of the eternal truths found in Scripture and tradition."--! From from back cover

"Recueil d'études faisant apparaître la spécificité de l'art de l'icône par rapport à l'art religieux en général. Il rappelle dans un premier temps des notions fondamentales qui concernent l'icône, puis décode des images pour montrer la distance qui sépare les icônes authentiques des icônes jugées fausses car créées sans la ferveur religieuse nécessaire."--[Source inconnue]
