British imperialism : crisis and deconstruction, 1914-1990 by P. J Cain( Book )

27 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 781 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The system even survived World War II, though Britain was now dependent on the United States. The sterling area played an important part in Britain's postwar recovery, and the empire was rallied to the cause of reconstruction. When the empire did begin to fall apart, it was not simply because it could no longer be controlled but also because it had served its purpose. Even as it sank, the City had found a new role, though an uncertain one, in a new financial world order functioning on a scale far greater than that encompassed by nation states or empires."--Jacket

British imperialism, 1688-2000 by P. J Cain( Book )

43 editions published between 1993 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 718 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The milestone in the understanding of British history and imperialism, this important book radically reinterprets the course of modern economic development and the causes of overseas expansion during the past three centuries. Employing their concept of gentlemanly capitalism, the authors draw imperial and domestic British history together to show how the shape of the nation and its economy depended on international and imperial ties, and how these ties were undone to produce the postcolonial world of today."
Hobson and imperialism : radicalism, new liberalism, and finance 1887-1938 by P. J Cain( )

19 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in English and held by 717 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The year 2002 sees the centenary of J. A. Hobson's Imperialism: A Study, the most influential critique of British Imperial expansion ever written. Peter Cain marks the occasion by evaluating, for the first time, Hobson's writings on imperialism from his days as a journalist in London to his death in 1940. The early chapters chart Hobson's progress from complacent imperialist in the 1880s to radical critic of empire by 1898. This is followed by an account of the origins of Imperialism and a close analysis of the text in the context of contemporary debates. Two chapters cover Hobson's later writings, showing their richness and variety, and analysing his decision to republish Imperialism in 1938 and its emergence as a 'classic' by the late 1930s. The book ends with a detailed discussion of the relevance of the arguments of Imperialism to present-day historians."--BOOK JACKET

9 editions published between 1992 and 2013 in English and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

J.A. Hobson's Imperialism: A Study, first written in 1902, was undoubtedly his most prolific work. Yet Hobson wrote frequently about the topic of imperialism over the course of his career, and a number of his articles are included in this collection, first published in 1992. Exploring areas such as the presence of capitalism in South Africa following his visits to the country in the lead-up to the Boer War, free trade, and the ethical implications of empire, these articles and extracts reflect how Hobson's ideas changed over the decades in which they were written. This is a fascinat
Character, ethics and economics : British debates on empire, 1860-1914 by P. J Cain( )

6 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an examination of the concept of 'character' as a moral marker in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its main purpose is to investigate how the `character talk' that helped to shape elite Britons' sense of themselves was used at this time to convince audiences, both in Britain and in the places they had conquered, that empire could be morally as well as materially justified and was a great force for good in the world. A small group of radical thinkers questioned many of the arguments of the imperialists but found it difficult to escape entirely from the sense of moral superiority that marked the latter's language
