The sexual brain by Simon LeVay( )

35 editions published between 1993 and 2000 in 8 languages and held by 3,329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines the biological roots of human sexual behavior. It puts forward the case that the diversity of human sexuality can best be understood in terms of the development, structure, and function of the brain circuits that produce it. Discarding preconceptions about the motivation and purpose of sexuality, LeVay discusses the scientific evidence bearing on such questions as why we are sexual animals, what the brain mechanisms are that produce sexual behavior, how these mechanisms differ between men and women and how these differences develop, and finally, what determines a person's sexual orientation: genes, prenatal events, family environment, or early sexual experiences? The book covers evolutionary theory, molecular genetics, endocrinology, brain structure and function, cognitive psychology, and development.--From publisher description
Queer science : the use and abuse of research into homosexuality by Simon LeVay( )

18 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 3,034 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research into homosexuality exemplifies both the promise and the danger of science applied to human nature. LeVay argues that the question of causation should not be the crucial issue in the gay-rights debate, but that science does have an important contribution to make. It can help to demonstrate that the traditional and still prevalent view of homosexuality - as a mere set of behaviors that anyone might show - is inadequate, and that gays and lesbians are in a real sense a distinct group of people within the larger society with a privileged insight into their own natures
Here be dragons : the scientific quest for extraterrestrial life by David Koerner( )

21 editions published between 2000 and 2002 in English and held by 2,538 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Here Be Dragons, astronomer David Koerner and neurobiologist Simon LeVay offer a scientifically compelling and colorful account of the search for life beyond Earth." "The authors survey the work of biologists, cosmologists, computer theorists, NASA engineers, SETI researchers, roboticists, and UFO enthusiasts and debunkers as they attempt to answer the greatest remaining question facing humankind: Are we alone? From their "safe haven of skepticism" the authors venture into the "rough seas of speculation," where theory and evidence run the gamut from hard science to hocus pocus. Arguing that the universe is spectacularly suited for the evolution of living creatures, Koerner and LeVay give us ringside seats at the great debates of Big Science. The contentious arguments about what really happens in evolution, the acrimonious UFO controversy, and the debate over intelligence versus artificial intelligence shed new light on the wildly divergent claims about the universe and life's place in it. The authors argue that while no direct evidence of extraterrestrial life yet exists, habitats and chemical building blocks for life abound in the universe. A wealth of new astronomical techniques and space missions may provide this evidence early in the next century."--Jacket
Gay, straight, and the reason why : the science of sexual orientation by Simon LeVay( Book )

25 editions published between 2010 and 2017 in English and held by 2,513 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What causes a child to grow up gay or straight? In this book, the author, a neuroscientist summarizes a wealth of scientific evidence that points to one inescapable conclusion: Sexual orientation results primarily from an interaction between genes, sex hormones, and the cells of the developing body and brain. He helped create this field in 1991 with a much-publicized study in Science magazine, where he reported on a difference in the brain structure between gay and straight men. Since then, an entire scientific discipline has sprung up around the quest for a biological explanation of sexual orientation. In this book, he provides a clear explanation of where the science stands today, taking the reader on a whirlwind tour of laboratories that specialize in genetics, endocrinology, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, evolutionary psychology, and family demographics. He describes, for instance, how researchers have manipulated the sex hormone levels of animals during development, causing them to mate preferentially with animals of their own gender. He also reports on the prevalence of homosexual behavior among wild animals, ranging from Graylag geese to the Bonobo chimpanzee. Although many details remain unresolved, the general conclusion is quite clear: A person's sexual orientation arises in large part from biological processes that are already underway before birth. He also makes it clear that these lines of research have a lot of potential because, far from seeking to discover "what went wrong" in the lives of gay people, attempting to develop "cures" for homosexuality, or returning to traditional explanations that center on parent-child relationships, various forms of "training," or early sexual experiences, our modern scientists are increasingly seeing sexual variety as something to be valued, celebrated, and welcomed into society
The earth in turmoil : earthquakes, volcanoes, and their impact on humankind by Kerry E Sieh( Book )

6 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 903 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Earth in Turmoil describes earthquakes and volcanoes from the point of view of scientists who are trying to understand their causes and forecast future activity. Volcanologists risk their lives to scoop samples from an erupting volcano's throat. Geologists scratch at the desert floor, looking for traces of ancient tremors. Seismographers track and interpret the sudden movements of rock deep beneath the Earth's surface. All of them are finding and fitting together pieces of a grand puzzle - the fathomless mystery of Earth's fitful evolution. Organized according to region, The Earth in Turmoil focuses on volcanic and seismic hazards across the United States, offering lively accounts of past disasters and predictions for the future, including a final chapter on how people can mitigate the damaging effects of earthquakes and volcanoes through individual and collective action

Pride divide( Visual )

3 editions published between 1997 and 2001 in English and held by 210 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the producers of the award-winning Last Call at Maud's, comes this ground breaking exploration of the gender gap between gays and lesbians. Politically united against global homophobia, they are poles apart on many life issues. Oddly enough, their struggle of male versus female mirrors many traditional conflicts inherent to straight relationships. The gay and lesbian community is not immune to gender conditioning. Here is the classic battle of the sexes from a totally new perspective, leavened with humor. The film looks at the issues around male domination versus female submission; promiscuousness versus commitment; exaltation of the body versus the spirit; AIDS versus breast cancer support. We hear about the subtle chauvinism by gay activists who excluded lesbians from their political and social life, especially in the conformist 1950s. Now, however, both sides seem willing to discuss these differences openly. Individuals involved in this dialogue include Martin Duberman, Barney Frank, Barbara Gittings, Simon LeVay, Camille Paglia and others. This lively film is sure to rouse discussion. Gay si nasce? : le radici dell'orientamento sessuale by Simon LeVay( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in Italian and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
