Herzog & de Meuron + Ai Weiwei : Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 by Herzog & de Meuron( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 2008, Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei joined forces to design the celebrated Beijing National Stadium for the Olympic Games. In 2012, the team came together again for the Serpentine Gallery's acclaimed annual commission, as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. Their pavilion takes visitors beneath the Serpentine's lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Supporting the structure from below, eleven columns symbolize past pavilions, and a twelfth represents the current one. The pavilion's interior is clad in cork, to evoke the excavated earth, and is built as a network of pathways and trenches. Herzog & de Meuron and Weiwei's archaeological approach creates a space that invites visitors to look beneath the surface of the park as well as back in time to the inspiration of earlier structures.--Provided by publisher
Bird's Nest : Herzog & de Meuron in China by Herzog & de Meuron( Visual )

9 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in German and English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

China is changing fast. More building work went on in China in the last year than in the whole of Europe over the last few years. Internationally reputed architects are in demand. The Basle-based star architects Herzog & de Meuron (Tate Modern in London, Allianz Arena football stadium in Munich, De Young Museum in San Francisco, among other projects) have been commissioned to build the National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics. The two architects have another project in progress in the Chinese province, where they are building an entire district for 300,000 people in Jinhua, a city with 3 million inhabitants. This project caters for the daily needs of the Chinese population. The documentary by Christoph Schaub and Michael Schindhelm shows how the Chinese culture affects the construction work of the architects: The specific architectonic form and the struggle to achieve it give us information about the society, the culture and everyday life in China. BIRD'S NEST - HERZOG & DE MEURON IN CHINA explores how these prestige buildings are being built in China. On the one hand, the documentary attempts to understand the two architects' very own method of contextual building applied successfully again and again. On the other hand, it explores the Chinese side: their intentions, their expectations, and their strategies in this complex creation process

Nairobi, Kenya : migration shaping the city by Shadi Rahbaran( Book )

4 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nairobi, in its short history spanning just over one hundred years, has grown to be one of the most varied and international cities of our contemporary world. Migration has been shown as one of the key forces influencing the city. In the context of Nairobi's complex colonial and postindependence political trajectory, migration has reinforced ethnic, spatial, and economic differences, leading to the formation of multiple power structures. This process is evident in the city's radically different urban patterns. The book documents, along specific neighborhoods, how different cultures of urban life constitute the city today

Treacherous transparencies : thoughts and observations triggered by a visit to Farnsworth House by Jacques Herzog( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Treacherous Transparencies analyzes transparency as expressed in architecture and art in an attempt to understand the intentions and objectives that underlie its use by pertinent architects and artists. The publication looks at a few important works by selected artists and architects who work with transparency as an artistic strategy, which they implement primarily by using glass and mirrors but other media as well. The architects and artists listed together in this context form an unlikely alliance: Bruno Taut, Ivan Leonidov, Marcel Duchamp, Mies van der Rohe, Dan Graham, and Gerhard Richter. But they do have something in common: their work marks salient way stations in the story of modernism up to the present day

From Basel : Herzog & de Meuron by Jean-François Chevrier( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The global success story of the Basel architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has local roots. This book traces these origins while identifying the essential ideas, professional ethics, and development of their architectural practice, established in 1978. The biographies of both architects and the activities of their practice are intimately bound up with the town of Basel. With this embeddedness in Basel as a point of departure, the authors elucidate central themes of their architectural oeuvre: from habitat to monument. With reference to exemplary buildings, they analyze the motifs, constructive principles, and spatial design of the architectonic works of Herzog & de Meuron. In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and its surroundings: statements by the architects, along with photographs taken especially for this volume by George Dupin, present the locales and buildings that have played key roles for the work of these architects. The book is rounded out by an intensive exchange of ideas between the architects and Jean-François Chevrier
