"Crown and Veil offers a broad introduction to the history and visual culture of female monasticism in the Middle Ages, from the earliest communities of Late Antiquity to the Reformation. Scholars from numerous disciplines offer a wide range of perspectives not to be found in any other single book on the subject, placing the art, architecture, literature, liturgy, religious practices, and economic foundations of these communities within a wide historical and cultural context." Malevich by Kazimir Severinovich Malevich( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 347 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This lavishly illustrated publication sheds new light on Malevich's remarkable career, from his participation in the quest for a new society to his confrontation with the Stalinist regime. Groundbreaking essays by prominent curators and art historians explore every aspect of his output--from his early paintings of Russian landscapes, agricultural workers and religious scenes to his dramatic step into abstraction and his much-debated return to figurative painting in later life. The artist's collaborative involvement with architecture and design is investigated, as well as his temporary abandonment of painting in favour of teaching and writing."--Back cover
Gods and heroes of the European Bronze Age by Kaitē Dēmakopoulou( Book )

6 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Bronze Age is one of the most important periods in the prehistory of Europe. Beginning around the mid-3rd millennium BC, its legacy can be found in spectacular monuments and artifacts across the continent, from Wessex in Britain to Knossos and Mycenae in Greece, and Troy in Asia Minor, extending to Maikop in the Caucasus. It was an age that saw the spread of a new technology - metallurgy - which was to have profound effects on the development of civilization in Europe. The use of bronze for tools and weapons was accompanied by other great transformations, such as specialized craftsmanship, a rise in exchange and trade, and increasing social stratification and political organization. Another innovation was the first appearance of writing in Europe - the Bronze Age thus also witnessed the birth of European history." "Gods and Heroes of the European Bronze Age is published to accompany a major exhibition that includes more than 250 of the finest objects from sites in twenty-three European countries."--Jacket

The Guggenheim Collection by Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation( Book )

4 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally, Solomon R. Guggenheim donated works from his collection to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which he began in 1937 to support and promote non-objective art. Then, in 1939, he established the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, which was renamed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1952, and its signature Frank Lloyd Wright building opened on New York's Fifth Avenue in 1959. Over time, the Guggenheim has expanded the type of art that it exhibits and collects through the addition of other great collections - notably, those of Karl Nierendorf, Peggy Guggenheim, Justin and Hilde Thannhauser, and Giuseppe Panza di Biumo - as well as through opportunities that resulted from the institution's increasingly international focus in more recent decades. The Guggenheim today encompasses venues on two continents: the museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin and the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum in Las Vegas. This volume is published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn, and the Kunstmuseum Bonn. With its comprehensive presentation of masterworks from the Guggenheim's extended holdings, it provides insight into Modern and Contemporary art movements - from Impressionism to Cubism, Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism, Pop art and Minimalism to the most recent developments - and the distinctive features of the collection. The selection emphasizes the Guggenheim's ongoing commitment to acquiring the work of particular artists in depth, including Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra and Matthew Barney, among many others

Ménage à trois : Warhol, Basquiat, Clemente by Dieter Buchhart( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in German and English and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The New York art scene of the 1980s is legendary - vital, creative and multimedia-based. It provided young talent with a playground full of opportunities. Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente are three of the main protagonists of this era. Between 1983 and 1985, they produced a number of collaborative works, whose appeal was based on their contrary painterly gestures. The works reflect the era, the (pop) star role and the new way in which the artists saw themselves, their mutual fascination but also the dark side of fame. This catalogue provides a comprehensive look at the collaboration between the three artists in the context of their own work and shows the captivating references and differences, the multifaceted nature of the collaboration and its art-historical importance."--Publisher's description

The Bauhaus : #itsalldesign( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume offers the most comprehensive overview of the extended concept of design that was initiated at the Bauhaus. Alongside rare exhibits from design, architecture, art, film and photography--some of which have never previously been published--the book documents the development processes as well as the socio-political concepts behind the Bauhaus. To underline their relevance for today's creative practice, these ideas are contrasted to current themes in design such as the digital revolution, and the works of numerous present-day artists and designers. The publication features essays by renowned authors, a glossary of the basic ideas behind design at the Bauhaus, as well as a detailed catalogue section. Among others, Olaf Nicolai, Adrian Sauer and Joseph Grima have created artistic works on the topic especially for the exhibition. Numerous short articles by distinguished designers, artists and architects from all over the world, who, with their ideas, projects and theories reflect on the topicality of the Bauhaus and its influence on 21st-century design, form part of this new and contemporary look at the movement. With works by Josef Albers, Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius, Marianne Brandt, Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Herbert Bayer and many others
