Multiscale problems and methods in numerical simulations : lectures given at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Martina Franca,
Italy 2001, September 915, 2001 by Centro internazionale matematico estivo(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume aims to disseminate a number of new ideas that have emerged in the last few years in the field of numerical simulation, all bearing the common denominator of the "multiscale" or "multilevel" paradigm. This covers the presence of multiple relevant "scales" in a physical phenomenon; the detection and representation of "structures", localized in space or in frequency, in the solution of a mathematical model; the decomposition of a function into "details" that can be organized and accessed in decreasing order of importance; and the iterative solution of systems of linear algebraic equations using "multilevel" decompositions of finite dimensional spaces

Rate of convergence estimates for nonselfadjoint eigenvalue approximations by
J. H Bramble(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the paper a general approximation theory for the eigenvalues and corresponding subspaces of generalized eigenfunctions of a certain class of compact operators is developed. This theory is then used to obtain rate of convergence estimates for the errors which arise when the eigenvalues of nonselfadjoint elliptic partial differential operators are approximated by RayleighRitzGalerkin type methods using finite dimensional spaces of trial functions, e.g. spline functions. The approximation methods include several in which the functions in the space of trial functions are not required to satisfy any boundary conditions. (Author)

Efficient higher order single step methods for parabolic problems : part I by
J. H Bramble(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Some efficient, high order methods are discussed for approximating the solution of an initial boundary value problem for a homogeneous parabolic equation with time dependent coefficients. The methods are based on Galerkintype approximations in the spacial variables and single step methods in the time variable. The equations defining the time stepping procedure are solved only approximately however. A preconditioned iterative technique is used for this purpose. The resulting algorithm is shown to produce optimal order approximations using only the order of work required by the single step method applied to the parabolic problem with time independent coefficients.
