While exhibiting some of the basic strengths of American cinema, this film is also something of a maverick. As a prison film, it stands out for its success in balancing the uncompromising presentation of the issues militating against prison reform and those of taut action drama, of documentary and melodrama. Freed from the demands of roles for star players, it is one of the few American films in which the focus is single mindedly on the confrontation between two groups - the authorities and the protesting prisoners - constituting two power blocs. The pitfalls of a too easy liberalism were avoided at the insistence of producer Walter Wanger, who himself had been a prison inmate, which coalesced with Siegel's uneasy relationship with the liberal ethos and that of individualism evident in many of his other films
