Advancement of learning and Novum organum by
Francis Bacon(
Book
)
46 editions published between 1899 and 2016 in English and held by 1,010 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Bacon's object in this work was to show the necessity of advancing knowledge, to justify learning by setting forth its dignity and true value. In pursuance of this end, he describes and classifies the existing sciences, showing, as he himself says, "not only things invented and known, but likewise things omitted which ought to be there." By exhibiting the defects of the existing sciences, and showing the possibility of filling up the gaps, he hoped to incite others to undertake the work. He will ring the bell, as he puts it, to call the wits together. Moreover, he feels it to be no small part of his duty to remove the hindrances which have so long retarded the advance of knowledge, and in particular to expose the pretensions of the Aristotelian philosophy, which seem to him the source of so much mischief"--Introduction. Lectures on human and animal psychology by
Wilhelm Max Wundt(
Book
)
49 editions published between 1894 and 2016 in English and held by 530 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This is the second edition of Wilhelm Wundt's Lectures on Human and Animal Psychology written in 1892 and translated from the original German. The elimination of everything that more recent inquiry had superseded has considerably diminished the size of the work. It has also suffered curtailment by the total exclusion of the discussions of social psychology which occupied a large portion of the second volume of the original book. As a matter of principle the contents of the Lectures are restricted to the individual psychology of man and the animals. But within the prescribed limits, the author's former plan of not attempting any completeness of exposition has been adhered to, and full advantage of the lecture form is used to discuss topics which are especially characteristic of the spirit and trend of modern psychology. At the same time, the work is in some sense supplementary to Wundt's other writings as few words are devoted to subjects which are elsewhere discussed in detail, and more attention is given to topics which are less prominent, particularly in the author's work Physiological Psychology. The reader who desires a deeper insight into psychology may, in such cases, refer to his more systematic work, which is more especially devoted to the investigation of the physiological correlates of psychical processes"--Preface.
