Re-presenting the good society by Maeve Cooke( )

12 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1,847 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A proposal for negotiating the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity in critical social theory. Contemporary critical social theories face the question of how to justify the ideas of the good society that guide their critical analyses. Traditionally, these more or less determinate ideas of the good society were held to be independent of their specific sociocultural context and historical epoch. Today, such a concept of context-transcending validity is not easy to defend; the "linguistic turn" of Western philosophy signals the widespread acceptance of the view that ideas of knowledge and validity are always mediated linguistically and that language is conditioned by history and context. In Re-Presenting the Good Society, Maeve Cooke addresses the justificatory dilemma facing critical social theories: how to maintain an idea of context-transcending validity without violating anti-authoritarian impulses. In doing so she not only clarifies the issues and positions taken by other theorists--including Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, and Judith Butler--but also offers her own original and thought-provoking analysis of context-transcending validity. Because the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity is today an integral part of critical social theory, Cooke argues that it should be negotiated rather than eliminated. Her proposal for a concept of context-transcending validity has as its central claim that we should conceive of the good society as re-presented in particular constitutively inadequate representations of it. These re-presentations are, Cooke argues provocatively, regulative ideas that have an imaginary, fictive character

Language and reason : a study of Habermas's pragmatics by Maeve Cooke( )

28 editions published between 1994 and 1997 in English and held by 1,508 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Readers of Juergen Habermas's "Theory of Communicative Action" and his later social theory know that the idea of communicative rationality is central to his version of critical theory. This text provides a general introduction to Habermas's programme of formal pragmatics - his reconstruction of the universal principles of possible understanding that, he argues, operate in everyday communicative practices. Philosophers of language should discover connections between Habermas's account of language and validity (especially his theory of meaning) and their own concerns. This work introduces the theory of communicative action as the background against which the programme of formal pragmatics must be understood. It then outlines the idea of communicative rationality as a postmetaphysical yet nondefeatist conception of reason. Two central chapters detail the connections Habermas asserts between language and validity, with particular attention to his theory of validity claims and his pragmatic theory of meaning. A final chapter looks at Habermas's account of the pathologies of modern society and at communicative rationality as a yardstick for measuring these pathologies. -- from http://www.amazon.ca (August 22, 2011)

Mobile source emissions including polycyclic organic species by D Rondia( )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book contains the combined papers from a NATO sponsored meeting entitled "Mobile Source Emissions Including Polycyclic Organic Species". This meeting was held in Liege, Belgium, from August 30 to September 2, 1982, as an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW). Specialists from 13 countries met to discuss the impacts of fuel type and engine operation on emissions from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. The meeting was organized into five sessions: basic studies, biological activity, analytical methods, data bases, engineering and international research programs. The five sessions were each followed by intensive discussions on the important conclusions to be drawn from the data presented. From these session discussions, subcommittee efforts and a final group discussion on all the research results presented, a meeting summary was prepared by the editors that presents the major findings of the conference and gives detailed recommendations for future research. This summary is included at the end of the book. The summary i"nc1udes highlights of data presented, areas of research needs, recommendations for standardization of test parameters and species analyzed, suggested new methodology for characterizing mobile emissions, trends in fuel use including diesel, gasoline, anti-knock additives and blending agents, operation of catalysts, control strategies, implications from both in vivo and in vitro health effects studies, and a presenta tion of the scopeiand direction of several large international programs that are major studies of mobile source performance
