James W. Marshall, working for John Sutter, was constructing a lumber mill when he noticed gold flecks in the riverbed. Upon discovering larger nuggets nearby, he reportedly said, "I've found it!" Marshall's discovery of gold changed the course of Californian history. Parson's biography was edited by Marshall himself, perhaps in hopes of reviving interest in his story. Marshall never made his fortune, as his various attempts at mining, a lumber mill and viticulture all failed. Marshall received a pension from the state of California, but died penniless in a small cabin in Kelsey
