A place called Chiapas by Nettie Wild( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 258 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army -- made up of impoverished Mayan Indians from the state of Chiapas -- took over five towns and 500 ranches in southern Mexico. The government deployed its troops, and at least 145 people died in the ensuing battle. Fighting for indigenous Mexicans to regain control over their lives and the land, the Zapatistas and their charismatic leader, guerilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, began sending their message to the world via the Internet. The result was what The New York Times called "the world's first postmodern revolution". Years into the uprising, filmmaker Nettie Wild traveled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico to film the elusive and fragile life of the rebellion over an eight month period. Her camera effectively and movingly captures the personal stories behind a very public clash of traditional culture and globalization

The Speed of Dreams presents the best of these writings from the 2001-2007 period spanning from the Zapatistas historic march to the Mexican capital in 2001, to the current phase of the "Other campaign" in the summer of 2007. The Speed of Dreams is the long-awaited follow-up to Our Word is Our Weapon, which Publishers Weekly described "as strong as dignity and as subtle as love" and the San Francisco Bay Guardian heralded "a literary masterpiece.""--book jacket

The book includes a recent interview with Marcos and speeches made by Zapatista comandantes, as well as the Zapatistas' "Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle, "B which places the indigenous struggle for democracy in its historical context and articulates an evolving vision for democracy, dignity, and justice. Zapatista Encuentro : documents from the 1996 Encounter for Humanity and against Neoliberalism by Encuentro Intercontinental por la Humanidad y contra el Neoliberalismo( Book )

5 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why is everyone so quiet' Is this the democracy you wanted'" So ask the Zapatistas, the group of indigenous Mexicans who, on January 1, 1994, mounted a rebellion against the implementation of NAFTA, political corruption, and the slow, unreported genocide of indigenous people worldwide. As the group expressed their demands and revealed their tactics, it quickly became obvious that they were less an armed guerilla force seeking to seize state power, and much more a social movement seeking to catalyze civil society's full democratic power. For this reason Mexican political analyst Gustava Esteva has called the Zapatista rebellion "the first revolution of the 21st century." He explains that whereas the revolutions of the 20th century were tests for state power, the Zapatista struggle was for greater local autonomy, economic justice, and political rights within the borders of their own communities. Zapatista Encuentro contains documents and communiquEs from Subcomandante Marcos - the leader of the Zapatistas - from the 1996 Encounter for Humanity and Against Neoliberalism. This remarkable event brought together 5,000 activists from all over the world to discuss how globalization (neoliberalism) affects us politically, culturally, economically, and socially

3 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the 1994 uprisings in the Mexican state of Chiapas, the spokesman of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, a masked rebel who calls himself Subcomandante Marcos, has become a symbol of revolt in the post-cold war era. Here are the words of Marcos, words that recast Mexican politics and revived rebel imaginations everywhere. They look back to the traditions of Indian resistance and the dormant ideals of the Mexican revolution; they look forward to political strategies, styles, and theories that challenge the dominance of capitalism. The Introduction by John Ross situates the Zapatistas in the context of Mexican history and the Afterword by Frank Bardacke discusses their language and politics, as well as their meaning for the U.S. left. This edition also includes an "exclusive" prologue by Subcomandante Marcos and his speech to the Zapatista's August 1994 national convention
