Airborne trailblazer by Lane E Wallace( Book )

7 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 595 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the story of a very unique airplane and the contributions it has made to the air transportation industry. NASA's Boeing 737-100 Transport Systems Research Vehicle was the prototype 737, acquired by the Langley Research Center in 1974 to conduct research into advanced transport aircraft technologies. In the twenty years that followed, the airplane participated in more than twenty different research projects, evolving from a research tool for a specific NASA program into a national airborne research facility. It played a critical role in developing and gaining acceptance for numerous significant transport technologies, including "glass cockpits," airborne windshear detection systems, data link for air traffic control communications, the microwave landing system, and the satellite-based global positioning system (GPS). Since the airplane played a role in such a wide variety of research programs, its story also provides an enlightening study of the many factors that influence the selection, development, and application of new technologies

A computational analysis of dopamine signaling at the level of the variscosty in rodent striatum by Katherine Elizabeth Rooney( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: Dopamine is a modulatory neurotransmitter that signals the saliency of the environmental input and is involved in the learned formation of responses. Dopamine neurons exist in twelve distinct nuclei throughout the brain, including the substantia nigra pars compacta and ventral tegmental area. The dopamine neurons in these two nuclei send projections to the extended striatum and frontal cortex. These dopamine neurons fire intrinsically at about 5 Hz, creating a baseline low nanomolar extracellular dopamine concentration in the striatum that can be measured using microdialysis. This suggests that baseline dopamine is essential for proper brain function. Dysfunction in the dopamine system leads to diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, addiction, schizophrenia and others. Currently, most of what we know about dopamine neurotransmission has been inferred from studies of other neurotransmitter systems. Because dopamine is a modulatory neurotransmitter, it is difficult to study dopamine signaling directly. Greater knowledge of dopamine release, re-uptake and receptor binding is vital in understanding the dopamine system as a whole and would provide valuable data to better treat the disease states associated with dopamine signaling. Herein, I will present research aimed at dissecting the parameters necessary to build a complete computer model of a dopamine varicosity to be used to better understand dopamine signaling

The Story of the Defense Technical Information Center 1945-1995, 50 Years of Information for Defense( )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1995, the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) celebrates 50 years of excellence in information service to the Department of Defense and, by extension to the Nation. The writing of this commemorative history was undertaken to pull together into one volume the story of that service: to relate how the Center began into what it is and, further, to suggest what we believe the future may hold for DTIC. The DTlC 50th Anniversary History is based on diverse sources including internal documents of the Center and its predecessor organizations, as well as published documents in both the Technical Reports collection, pictorial archives, and the open literature. Just as importantly, it draws upon the interviews with many persons who themselves participated in the events, technological advances, and policy-making decisions that were significant in the evolution of the Center, DTIC was established in 1945 as the Air Documents Division to collect and catalog World War 2 scientific and technical documents(including those captured from Germany and Japan. Today we are the central facility for the Department of Defense in the acquisition, storage, retrieval, dissemination, and use of scientific, technical, and engineering information. DTIC serves as the vital link in transferring such data among the defense-related government and civilian research and development communities
