The downtown book : the New York art scene, 1974-1984( Book )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 390 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Downtown is more than just a location, it's an attitude--and in the 1970s and '80s, that attitude forever changed the face of America. This book charts the intricate web of influences that shaped the generation of experimental and outsider artists working in Downtown New York during the crucial decade from 1974 to 1984. Published in conjunction with the first major exhibition of downtown art (organized by New York University's Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library), The Downtown Book brings the Downtown art scene to life, exploring everything from Punk rock to performance art. The book probes trends that arose in the 1970s and solidified New York's reputation as arbiter of the postmodern American avant-garde. By 1974, the hippie euphoria of the previous decade, with its optimism, free love, and paeans to personal fulfillment, was over. In its place emerged a new kind of experimentation--in art, sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The seven essays featured here examine from different perspectives how Downtown artists constantly pushed the limits of both traditional media and the art world. Art critic Carlo McCormick addresses the energy, power, drugs, and nonstop erotic motion that propelled the scene. Music historian Bernard Gendron explores how minimalism, loft jazz, and Punk all occupied the same Downtown spaces. RoseLee Goldberg, the noted scholar and critic of performance art, looks back at ten years of its ascendancy Downtown. English professor Robert Siegle casts a critical eye on the literature of the Downtown scene. Librarian and archivist Marvin J. Taylor surveys Downtown as both geography and metaphor, and grapples with the question of how best to organize and preserve materials that often challenge the very notion of the archive

This fascinating and visually exciting exhibition catalog reflects the more personal side of Andy Warhol's celebrity persona, that of the compulsive and obsessive collector. With a little help from Frederick Hughes and Jed Johnson, Warhol became a collector extraordinaire with an eye for everything from fine art to furniture to kitsch. This catalog chronicles the diversity of Warhol's obsession, based on the historic Sotheby's auction of his personal collection in April 1988. Essays by a range of contributors focus on Warhol's life as a collector, his important museum installations, and various collection genres. Highlighted are notable objects from art deco to Americana, including Native American and folk art, as well as jewelry and shoes, photographs and cookie jars, and his unique "time capsules."

Between 1964 and 1966 at his Factory studio in New York City, Andy Warhol shot nearly 500 Screen Tests, beautiful and revealing portraits of hundreds of different individuals. Captured with his stationary 16mm Bolex camera on silent, black and white, 100-foot rolls of film. When projected at 16 frames per second each film is approximately four minutes long and mesmerizing in the purest sense of the word. Warhol used these films in many different contexts, as individual exhibits, as background for other exhibits and occasions, as portraits of his friends for his personal collection of mementos. The thirteen presented in this collection illustrate a recurrent theme in Warhol's work: his fascination with people

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Famous for his effortlessly chic Ultrasuede shirtdress and other modern classics, Halston was the defining American fashion designer of the 1970s. Just as his friend Andy Warhol challenged the canon of high art, Halston democratized fashion with elegant and urbane ready-to-wear clothes. Halston and Warhol complements a groundbreaking exhibition of clothes and accessories by Halston, art by Warhol, and photographs and ephemera that document the connections between the two men against the social backdrop of 1970s New York. Included are essays, interviews, and biographical timelines that cover topics such as Halston's importance in the canon of American couture, Warhol's Fashion TV, the similarities in their lives and careers, and the role of celebrity in art and fashion." -- Publisher's website
