The downtown book : the New York art scene, 1974-1984( Book )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 394 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Downtown is more than just a location, it's an attitude--and in the 1970s and '80s, that attitude forever changed the face of America. This book charts the intricate web of influences that shaped the generation of experimental and outsider artists working in Downtown New York during the crucial decade from 1974 to 1984. Published in conjunction with the first major exhibition of downtown art (organized by New York University's Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library), The Downtown Book brings the Downtown art scene to life, exploring everything from Punk rock to performance art. The book probes trends that arose in the 1970s and solidified New York's reputation as arbiter of the postmodern American avant-garde. By 1974, the hippie euphoria of the previous decade, with its optimism, free love, and paeans to personal fulfillment, was over. In its place emerged a new kind of experimentation--in art, sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The seven essays featured here examine from different perspectives how Downtown artists constantly pushed the limits of both traditional media and the art world. Art critic Carlo McCormick addresses the energy, power, drugs, and nonstop erotic motion that propelled the scene. Music historian Bernard Gendron explores how minimalism, loft jazz, and Punk all occupied the same Downtown spaces. RoseLee Goldberg, the noted scholar and critic of performance art, looks back at ten years of its ascendancy Downtown. English professor Robert Siegle casts a critical eye on the literature of the Downtown scene. Librarian and archivist Marvin J. Taylor surveys Downtown as both geography and metaphor, and grapples with the question of how best to organize and preserve materials that often challenge the very notion of the archive

This fascinating and visually exciting exhibition catalog reflects the more personal side of Andy Warhol's celebrity persona, that of the compulsive and obsessive collector. With a little help from Frederick Hughes and Jed Johnson, Warhol became a collector extraordinaire with an eye for everything from fine art to furniture to kitsch. This catalog chronicles the diversity of Warhol's obsession, based on the historic Sotheby's auction of his personal collection in April 1988. Essays by a range of contributors focus on Warhol's life as a collector, his important museum installations, and various collection genres. Highlighted are notable objects from art deco to Americana, including Native American and folk art, as well as jewelry and shoes, photographs and cookie jars, and his unique "time capsules."

Deborah Kass : before and happily ever after by Deborah Kass( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first comprehensive book accompanying a major touring exhibition by the painter Deborah Kass. More than any artist of the last thirty years, New York City-based painter Deborah Kass has made it her life's work to position women artists on the great paternal playing field of art history. From her early paintings of the sea pounding rocky shores to her eponymous Warhol Project series and her recent text-based works, Kass has quite literally fired the canon, challenged the status quo, and refigured art history. The book features in-depth essays by a panoply of important figures, including Robert Storr, renowned curator, professor, and onetime subject of a Kass painting, and Griselda Pollock, one of the most important feminist art historians in the field. The volume can be seen as both a primer on feminist movements of the past thirty years and as a potent wake-up call to the establishment that artists of Kass's caliber must be at the forefront of today's art world."--Publisher's website
13 most beautiful-- : songs for Andy Warhol's screen tests by Andy Warhol( Visual )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between 1964 and 1966 at his Factory studio in New York City, Andy Warhol shot nearly 500 Screen Tests, beautiful and revealing portraits of hundreds of different individuals. Captured with his stationary 16mm Bolex camera on silent, black and white, 100-foot rolls of film. When projected at 16 frames per second each film is approximately four minutes long and mesmerizing in the purest sense of the word. Warhol used these films in many different contexts, as individual exhibits, as background for other exhibits and occasions, as portraits of his friends for his personal collection of mementos. The thirteen presented in this collection illustrate a recurrent theme in Warhol's work: his fascination with people

Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei by National Gallery of Victoria( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) are two of the most internationally renowned artists of the past 100 years, famous not only for their artwork but also for influencing the culture of their time. This exciting book is the first to consider the work of these artists alongside one another, in dialogue and in correspondence, to explore the artists' meticulous observations of modern and contemporary art, life, and politics. Andy Warhol's investigation of consumer society, fame, and celebrity offers thought-provoking points of connection with Ai Weiwei's interrogation of the relationship between tradition and modernity, the role of the individual to the state, questions of human rights, and the value of freedom of expression. Parallels also exist between the ways in which each artist transformed the understanding of artistic value and studio production, and redefined the role of the artist-as impresario, cultural producer, activist, and brand. Alongside beautifully reproduced images by both artists-including works by Ai Weiwei published here for the first time-are illuminating essays by an international team of art experts, curators, and scholars that survey the scope of the artists' careers and interpret the significant impact of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei on modern art and contemporary life. This deluxe, collectible catalogue is available in three different, limited-edition colors"--Publisher's website

"Famous for his effortlessly chic Ultrasuede shirtdress and other modern classics, Halston was the defining American fashion designer of the 1970s. Just as his friend Andy Warhol challenged the canon of high art, Halston democratized fashion with elegant and urbane ready-to-wear clothes. Halston and Warhol complements a groundbreaking exhibition of clothes and accessories by Halston, art by Warhol, and photographs and ephemera that document the connections between the two men against the social backdrop of 1970s New York. Included are essays, interviews, and biographical timelines that cover topics such as Halston's importance in the canon of American couture, Warhol's Fashion TV, the similarities in their lives and careers, and the role of celebrity in art and fashion." -- Publisher's website

Explore Andy Warhol's surprising, lifelong engagement with nature as subject matter for his artistic practice. While he was well known for his responsiveness to popular culture and advertising, Warhol simultaneously engaged with the natural world through his work, depicting landscapes, flora, and fauna in innovative and surprising ways. Accompanying the exhibition Warhol's Nature, organised by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and featuring works drawn primarily from the collections of the Andy Warhol Museum, this fully illustrated book covers every decade of the Pop icon's long career, from his earliest drawings as a commercial illustrator through his later paintings of flowers and wildlife. Gain fresh perspective on artworks like Warhol's Self-Portrait in his infamous fright wig overlaid with camouflage, the iconic Flowers series of the 1960s, rarely seen photographs, and more. Essays by Warhol scholars and experts offer further insight into this understudied yet vitally important strain of the artist's career. 0Exhibition: Crystal Bridges Museum, Bentonville, USA (04.07-05.10.2015)
