The story of Olof, an adolescent boy growing up in Sweden in the period prior to World War I. Olaf begins his working life as a logger in Northern Sweden and then quickly progresses through a series of jobs in a brick factory and a sawmill, finally taking a job as a projectionist in a small provincial cinema. Along the way a carnival dancer inititiates him into the joys of sex. As he grows older he joins Sweden's Socialist movement and becomes a union organizer working in the Swedish railroad system. The melancholic quality of the film is summed up in a statement by a logger that Olaf meets while working in Northern Sweden, "I've had my ups and downs, like butter you drop on the stove, a hiss and then its gone."
