Ice bound : a doctor's incredible battle for survival at the South Pole by Jerri Nielsen( Book )

21 editions published between 2001 and 2012 in English and German and held by 2,925 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A physician stranded at the South Pole describes how she discovered a lump in her breast, treated herself with a biopsy and chemotherapy, and was rescued by the Air National Guard, and reflects on her experiences and her colleagues. The Antarctic winter, with temperatures 100 below zero, shuts supply lines down completely; conditions are too treacherous for planes or boats and the only connection with the rest of the world is satellite hook-up. During the long winter of 1999, Dr. Nielsen, the only physician on a staff of forty-one people, discovered a lump in her breast. Consulting via satellite e-mail with doctors in the U.S., she was forced to perform a biopsy & in June began to treat herself with chemotherapy, in order to insure that she could survive until conditions permitted her rescue in October. A daring rescue by the Air National Guard ensued, who landed, dropped off a replacement physician, & in less than five minutes took off with Dr. Nielsen. Set in one of the most remote and desolate yet strikingly beautiful landscapes on earth, Jerri Nielsen's narrative of her transforming experiences is a thrilling adventure of researchers & scientists embattled by a hostile environment, a chronicle of the marvels -- and limits -- of modern medical technology, & a penetrating exploration of the dynamics of an isolated, intensely connected community faced with adversity. But at its core this is a powerfully moving drama of one woman's voyage of self-discovery & courage & the fierce dedication of scores of colleagues -- both known & unknown to her -- whose aid proved to be her salvation. "Ice Bound" is the inspiring true story of Dr. Jerri Nielsen, the physician with breast cancer stranded at a South Pole research station, whose amazing rescue made headlines around the globe. Set in a remote and desolate yet strikingly beautiful landscape, Nielsen's narrative of her transforming experience is a thrilling adventure
All that is bitter & sweet : a memoir by Ashley Judd( Book )

14 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 2,072 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ashley Judd is an award-winning film and stage actor known for both box-office hits and art-house gems. Yet in 2002, she found her true calling: as a humanitarian and advocate for those suffering in neglected parts of the world. Asked why she was opting out while she was one of the highest-paid women in Hollywood, she could not provide an answer. She simply knew that after her first trip to the notorious brothels, slums, and hospices of southeast Asia, her own life depended on advocating on behalf of the vulnerable. Along the way, Ashley realized that the coping strategies she had developed to deal with her own emotional pain were no longer working. Seeking in-patient treatment, she found an expanded kit of spiritual tools that energized and advanced her feminist social justice work. Now, she describes her odyssey, as a left-behind lost child attains international prominence as a fiercely dedicated advocate.--From publisher description
In order to live : a North Korean girl's journey to freedom by Yeonmi Park( Book )

13 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 1,506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Human rights activist Park, who fled North Korea with her mother in 2007 at age 13 and eventually made it to South Korea two years later after a harrowing ordeal, recognized that in order to be "completely free," she had to confront the truth of her past. It is an ugly, shameful story of being sold with her mother into slave marriages by Chinese brokers, and although she at first tried to hide the painful details when blending into South Korean society, she realized how her survival story could inspire others. Moreover, her sister had also escaped earlier and had vanished into China for years, prompting the author to go public with her story in the hope of finding her sister
Ghosts of Mississippi : the murder of Medgar Evers, the trials of Byron de la Beckwith, and the haunting of the new South by Maryanne Vollers( Book )

9 editions published between 1995 and 2013 in English and held by 1,278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The civil rights movement was just beginning to catch fire in Mississippi on the night in 1963 when white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith crouched in the honeysuckle across the street from NAACP leader Medgar Evers's house and shot him in the back. Three decades later, Beckwith was finally convicted of murder and sent to prison for life. It was his third trial - the previous two having ended in mistrials in 1964 - and it concluded one of the most rankling cases of the civil rights era. In Ghosts of Mississippi, journalist Maryanne Vollers tells the inside story of that state's struggle to confront the ghosts of its violent past in order to bring a killer to justice. Medgar Evers was a martyr of the sixties, the first man down in the decade of the assassin. His murder might have gone unpunished if not for the uneasy alliance between his widow, who vowed to "go the last mile" for her husband, and a young white prosecutor who finally found the way. Vollers weaves a compelling narrative that captures the journey from the old South to the new. Drawing on her rare access to prosecutors, Evers's family, and Beckwith himself, Vollers re-creates the events of Evers's life and death while bringing to light new facts and insights into the assassination case and the conspiracy theories that surround it. The result is a thrilling tale of racism, murder, courage, redemption, and the ultimate triumph of justice
