The Wesker trilogy : Chicken soup with barley, Roots [and] I'm talking about Jerusalem by Arnold Wesker( Book )

27 editions published between 1959 and 1981 in English and Danish and held by 338 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wesker's trilogy, largely based on the playwright's own life, is about a family of left-wing Jewish intellectuals, the Kahns, living in London's East End. The plays were conceived as parts of a whole (though they first appeared separately) and cover a span of twenty-three years from October 1936 to October 1959. In the first few lines of "Chicken Soup with Barley" there are references to a political demonstration, and the final scene of "I'm Talking about Jerusalem" begins with the reading of the results of the general election. The plays are thus concerned, directly or indirectly, with political developments, which are woven into the Kahns' story. The interweaving is not always entirely successful, but Wesker has made an ambitious and impressive attempt to write about the times through which he lived and to do it in a way that brings out the political significance of the period and the impact of politics on his family's life
