Malevich and film by Margarita Tupitsyn( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Russian Painter Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935), unlike other prominent Soviet artists, has not been much considered in discussions of the contributions of the avant-garde to photography and film. Yet a close examination of theoretical and practical aspects of Malevich's oeuvre not only places him fully in the Soviet post-abstract discourse on these media but also, as Margarita Tupitsyn argues in this book, alters the accepted view of his post-Suprematist period. Exploring Malevich's involvement with film for the first time, Tupitsyn draws on little-known writings about cinema by the artist himself, newly accessible works, and many previously unpublished photographs and documents. Malevich's influence on twentieth-century art extends far more widely than has been claimed for him before, the author concludes." "The book begins with a re-evaluation of Malevich's most famous painting, Black Square, a work whose meaning and function was in constant flux. Through Black Square Malevich began to cross the bridge from the painting medium to mechanically generated production, ultimately influencing the post-revolutionary phase of his Suprematism and leading to his abandonment of abstraction in the late 1920s. Tupitsyn discusses in detail Malevich's writing about the cinema, the cinematic qualities of some of his works, the work of other contemporary artists with bonds to cinematography, and the significant impact of Malevich's thought and work on Russian, European, and American artists of the 1920s and 1930s as well as the post-war period." "This book is the catalogue for an exhibition that opens in Lisbon at the Fundacao Centro Cultural de Belem in May 2002, then travels to Spain."--Jacket
Hold still, keep going by Robert Frank( Book )

7 editions published in 2001 in English and Spanish and held by 293 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Robert Frank not only ranks among the most important of living photographers but is also widely recognized as a seminal figure in the development of experimental cinema. And yet, the continuity and consistency of his work in both photography and film has been barely explored. "Hold still-keep going" fills this obvious void by illustrating and analyzing the underlying aesthetics that have guided Frank's work in both media. From the very outset of his career, Frank distrusted the single photographic image and its claim to freeze moments of truth: time and again he gravitated to the moving image and serial photography, be it in book form or as a panel of photographs. Reproducing more than 100 collages, film stills and serial works, this volume will certainly become a new standard publication on Robert Frank, innovative photographer and experimental filmmaker. The book also contains an illustrated bibliography and biography featuring dozens of previously unpublished images of Robert Frank, his family and his friends. Published in conjunction with a major traveling exhibition, this is an essential addition to all photography and film collections."--Jacket

Modern art in Portugal : 1910-1940 : the artist contemporaries of Fernando Pessoa( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Portugal's contribution to European art during the first half of the century has yet to be explored. An examination of the 113 paintings, sculptures, drawings and periodicals introduced in this volume through both texts and illustrations makes it possible for the first time to reconstruct the emergence of Portuguese artists into the modern period. A historical outline and essays on art, literature and social issues by prominent Portuguese authors illuminate the vital links that connected the arts to political developments. Texts and illustrations regarding arts journals are documented in an effort to present the intellectual climate, and the influence of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa is a recurring theme
Candida Höfer : em Portugal by Candida Höfer( Book )

11 editions published in 2006 in 3 languages and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Portugal is a small country with a great past. Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India turned the independent kingdom of Portugal into the leading sea and colonial power in the Western world. Lisbon, presumably founded by the Phoenicians, was one of Europe's richest cities in the heyday of the Age of Discovery. Today, Portugal's monasteries and churches, its palaces, libraries, opera houses, and museums which have survived evoke past glory with immense murals composed of colored tiles and ornate sculptural décor. Photographic imaging work with the German photographer Candida Hofer's photographs from Portugal of theaters, lecture halls, palaces, churches, archives and more
