War and decision : inside the Pentagon at the dawn of the War on terrorism by Douglas J Feith( Book )

16 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in English and Arabic and held by 960 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Of all the players in the planning and evolution of the Bush Administration's war on terrorism, few were more integral--or more controversial--than Douglas Feith, the chief strategist on Donald Rumsfeld's Pentagon policy team. A highly influential international policy analyst for more than a quarter century, Feith worked closely with Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Vice President Cheney, and President Bush in defining the U.S. response to the attacks of 9/11--from the successful war on Afghanistan to the more challenging invasion of Iraq and its aftermath. Now, in this candid and revealing memoir, Feith--a charter member of the neoconservative movement and an architect of the administration's preventive strategy in the war on terrorism--offers the most in-depth and authoritative account yet of the Pentagon's evolving stance during one of the most controversial eras of American history. Drawing upon a unique trove of documents and records, this extraordinary chronicle will put the reader in the room for scores of previously unreported senior-level meetings, showing how hundreds of critical decisions were made in defense of American interests during and after the crisis of 9/11--decisions both successful and controversial. Where journalists like Bob Woodward could only speculate, Feith is the first inside player to reveal the inner workings of the Pentagon, at a time when history hung in the balance.--From publisher description

Organizing for a strategic ideas campaign to counter ideological challenges to U.S. national security by Douglas J Feith( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Islamist extremism is a political ideology related to the religion of Islam but it is not the same as the religion. The ideology propagates the idea that the West is inevitably hostile to Islam, an idea that can in turn serve to justify hatred of and violent struggle against the West. There is a traditional disinclination on the part of U.S. officials to view national security threats in ideological terms. This disinclination has been especially pronounced in the case of Islamist extremism because of the understandable concern about appearing to oppose a religion. Yet there are compelling national security reasons to recognize Islamist extremism as a serious problem, not least because of the dangers of jihadist terrorism, and to develop strategy and doctrine to counter the ideology. The most effective means to counter Islamist extremism is not through public diplomacy or strategic communications by U.S. officials. Rather it is through dialogue among Muslims. Americans interested in countering Islamist extremism face the question of how to organize efforts to stimulate and influence debates among Muslims. This is not a matter of 'messaging.' Rather, it is an operational challenge, which this doctrine paper can help meet
