This symposium showcased the advancement in processing technology and basic scientific understanding of ferroelectric thin films. The conference highlighted the use of novel materials science analysis techniques to characterize ferroelectric thin film materials and devices and to relate the nanoscale features and responses detected by these techniques to ferroelectric, electrooptic and piezoelectric properties. Examples of newer material analysis techniques included atomic force microscopy, electron spin resonance, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, combined Rutherford backscattering- nuclear reaction analysis and the use of optical interferometry to provide a three dimensional representation of field induced displacement
Electrical characteristics of barium strontium titanate-oxide composite films( )

In a previous work, composites of BSTO combined with other nonelectrically active oxide ceramics have been formulated and have demonstrated adjustable electronic properties which can be tailored for use in various electronic devices. One application has been for use in phased array antennas and insertion has been accomplished into several working antenna systems. To further accommodate the frequencies required by these phased array antennas, thin films of the composites have been fabricated using a Krypton Fluoride excimer laser as an ablation source. The electrical properties, including the dielectric constant and the tunability (change in the dielectric constant with applied voltage) have been measured. The results have been compared to those obtained for the bulk ceramic composites and other BSTO/oxide composite thin film structures. (jg)

Thin Films of Novel Ferroelectric Composites( )

Composites of BSTO combined with other non electrically active oxides have demonstrated adjustable electronic properties which can be tailored for use in various electronic devices. These novel composites of barium strontium titanate (BSTO) and Oxide III compounds have already exhibited promising results in their ceramic form. The additive oxides modify the dielectric constant, tunability (change in the dielectric constant with applied voltage), and dielectric loss of the material. One application has been for use in phased array antennas and insertion has been accomplished into several working antenna systems. To further accommodate the frequencies required by these phased array antennas, thin films of the composites have been fabricated. Preliminary studies have indicated that thin films of such composites exhibit similar behavior as their bulk ceramic counterparts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the properties of the BSTO/Oxide III based compounds in thin film form. (MM)
Investigation of the Characteristics of Ferroelectric Thin Films Deposited by Pulsed Laser Ablation( )

Ferroelectric thin films of barium strontium titanate (BSTO) have been deposited on bare and metallized substrates by the pulsed laser ablation method under different oxygen ambients (150 mT and 50 mT). Under an oxygen pressure of 150 mT, the film composition was similar to that of its ablation target composition, viz. Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)TiO3. However, when the films were deposited under the lower oxygen pressure, x-ray diffraction studies showed the presence of a secondary phase. The electrical characteristics of the films were measured to examine the effect of the stoichiometry on the dielectric constant and tunability. jg
