Red Cloud's War : the Bozeman Trail, 1866-1868 by John D McDermott( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

McDermott recounts how the discovery of gold in Montana in 1863 led to the opening of the 250-mile route from Fort Laramie to the goldfields near Virginia City, and the fortification of this route with three military posts. The road crossed the Powder River Basin, the last, best hunting grounds of the Northern Plains tribes. Oglala chief Red Cloud and his allies mounted a campaign of armed resistance against the army and Montana-bound settlers. Among a host of small but bloody clashes were such major battles as the Fetterman Disaster, the Wagon Box Fight, and the Hayfield Fight, all of them famous in the annals of the Indian Wars. McDermott's spellbinding narrative offers a cautionary tale of hubris and mis-calculation. The United States Army suffered one setback after another; what reputation for effectiveness it had gained during the Civil War dissipated in the skirmishing in faraway Big Horn country

Red Cloud : Oglala legend by John D McDermott( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A celebrated warrior who led his people to victory on the battlefield, Red Cloud was also a skilled diplomat who transitioned the Oglala Sioux to reservation life. John D. McDermott examines Red Cloud's early years, his rise to prominence, and his struggle to protect his people from cultural domination. McDermott goes beyond Red Cloud's War to focus on the Oglala chief's time as a statesman. Chronicling the chief's diplomatic trips to the United States capital, the author examines the changes in Red Cloud's vision of armed resistance and his long-term strategy for maintaining Oglala life and culture. Through negotiation, passive resistance, and selective integration, Red Cloud worked to defend his people's interests in the face of change. As the only American Indian leader to win a war against the United States Army, Red Cloud is a larger-than-life figure in the history of the West. McDermott adds new layers to the story of the chief, illuminating his early youth and worldview through little-used sources
Forlorn hope : the Nez Perce victory at White Bird Canyon by John D McDermott( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On a June morning in 1877, 109 soldiers and civilian volunteers rode into White Bird Canyon in the Idaho Territory. They planned to launch a surprise attack on a band of Nez Perce Indians camped in the canyon. In the encounter that followed, a numerically inferior force of Nez Perce warriors inflicted a defeat on the soldiers more complete than the one suffered the previous year by the Seventh Cavalry at the Little Bighorn. The battle at White Bird Canyon was the spark that ignited a four-month, 1,200-mile trek that ended in tragedy for the tribe that only seventy years earlier had saved Lewis and Clark from starvation. Published in a limited edition in 1978, "Forlorn Hope" was named by Indian wars historians as one of the best books ever written on the Nez Perce War. It provides an easy-to-read snapshot of the politics and people involved in a unique chapter in the history of Idaho and the American West
