Alberto Giacometti by Christian Klemm( Book )

7 editions published in 2001 in German and English and held by 840 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Today, one hundred years after his birth and a generation after his death, Alberto Giacometti is recognized as one of the small group of modern masters who dominated art during much of the twentieth century. This centennial volume both celebrates his achievement and reexamines his work, and thus contributes to a more focused concentration on the art itself" "The importance of reassessing Giacometti's work resides not only in each new generation finding a somewhat different artist than its forebears, but also in that each fresh look tends to impede the spread of myths and generalizations that shield us from the complexities of a great artist's oeuvre. This publication is meant to extend popular and critical understanding of Giacometti's achievement and to return the reader to the center of Giacometti's work, where new insights can only be revealed by the objects themselves."--Jacket
The original copy : photography of sculpture, 1839 to today by Roxana Marcoci( Book )

16 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 533 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The exhibition and book were conceived by Roxana Marcoci ... who organized them around distinct conceptual ideas. Examining the rich historical legacy of photography, and the aesthetic shifts that have taken place in the medium over the last 170 years, she also built on extensive conversations and collaborations with living artists to explore its uses within contemporary art practice. At the same time she asked the question, 'What is sculpture?, ' tracing it through a selection of 300 outstanding pictures that tap on a broad spectrum of expressions, ranging in subject from inanimate objects to the performing human body. The Original Copy incorporates impressive groups of works by many key figures of modernist and avant-garde art"--Page 7

Thomas Struth, photographs, 1978-2010 by Thomas Struth( Book )

34 editions published in 2010 in 3 languages and held by 343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Photographer Thomas Struth is one of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from Europe in the late twentieth century. With great precision, clarity of color, and an unwavering instinct for composition, he addresses both important photographic motifs and informal, often little-known subjects. Struth characteristically treats the various aspects of his photographs in an even-handed way, a neutrality he also applies to the viewer, for he puts the viewing public on a par with his pictorial world. This lavish volume is the most comprehensive study of Struth's œuvre, showcasing all of the famous series and images: the streetscapes of Düsseldorf, New York City, Rome, China, and elsewhere; the family portraits; the museum photographs; the flowers, plants, and rainforests; and most recently, the studies of science and technology. Struth revisits many of his subjects, adding ever more layers of complexity and interpretation. Essays by renowned curators and critics complete this essential study of one of the world's major artists."--Publisher description

Ferdinand Hodler, landscapes by Ferdinand Hodler( Book )

19 editions published in 2004 in 3 languages and held by 276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) is one of the most important Swiss painters. His work, influenced by Realism and Symbolism, was and is widely shown all over Europe and prefigured art nouveau and modernist abstraction. His landscape paintings remain the most vital part of his oeuvre to this day. This book shows around 70 of his most beautiful and important landscape paintings and examines the importance of landscape in the creative development of this seminal Swiss painter. In his beginnings, Hodler was influenced by the late Romantics and French landscape painting. He later developed his own quietly monumental style. In the last two decades of his life, he created a landscape oeuvre counting among the major achievements of modern European painting. An indispensable introduction to the work of this often neglected Swiss master."--BOOK JACKET

Paul Gauguin : the prints by Tobia Bezzola( Book )

17 editions published in 2012 in English and German and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The rarely seen works collected in this volume comprise nearly the entire print output of Paul Gauguin. Universally revered as one of the founding fathers of modern painting, Paul Gauguin was also an accomplished printer. Working mostly in woodcuts, he translated his fascination with life in the South Seas into pieces of extraordinary beauty and simplicity. This volume presents the three print series that Gauguin created: a dozen zinc etchings made in 1889; his most famous series, the partially hand-tinted woodcuts created for his famed book Noa Noa, which were made after Gauguin's first trip to Tahiti; and a third series of woodcuts completed during his second stay on the island. This small printed oeuvre demonstrates how the medium was an ideal outlet for Gauguin's experimental and audacious artistry. 0Exhibition: Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland
