Hypogene karst regions and caves of the world by A. B Klimchuk( )

10 editions published in 2017 in English and German and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book illustrates the diversity of hypogene speleogenetic processes and void-conduit patterns depending on variations of the geological environments by presenting regional and cave-specific case studies. The cases include both well-known and newly recognized hypogene karst regions and caves of the world. They all focus on geological, hydrogeological, geodynamical and evolutionary contexts of hypogene speleogenesis. The last decade has witnessed the boost in recognition of the possibility, global occurrence, and practical importance of hypogene karstification (speleogenesis), i.e. the development of solutional porosity and permeability by upwelling flow, independent of recharge from the overlying or immediately adjacent surface. Hypogene karst has been identified and documented in many regions where it was previously overlooked or misinterpreted. The book enriches the basis for generalization and categorization of hypogene karst and thus improves our ability to adequately model hypogene karstification and predict related porosity and permeability. It is a book which benefits every researcher, student, and practitioner dealing with karst"--Back cover

Karsts alpins, genèse de grands réseaux souterrains : exemples, les Tennengebirge, Autriche, l'Île de Crémieu, la Chartreuse et le Vercors, France by Philippe Audra( )

7 editions published between 1993 and 1995 in French and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this work is to propose a number of milestone in the history of these karstic regions, proceeding from examples of underground alpine networks. In the high limestone alps of Salzburg, the karst of the Tennengebirge has undergone modifications since the tertiary with the development of a cone karst and vast tiered networks. The Cosa nostra - Bergerhohle system came into being in the plio-quaternary period as a consequence of the combined effect of upthrust and glaciation. The low plateau of the ile de cremieu conceals an ancient karstic topography oblitarated by glacial deposits. The cave of la Balme has evolved at least since the early pleistocene in acordance with variations in the base level of the rhone. In the Prealps, the dent de crolles and the moucherotte conceal subhorizontal perched conduits dating back to the Pliocene. Their development went on during the Pleistocene. In the Vercors, the Vallier cave harbours sediments of the lower Pleistocene, unique alpine evidence of the glaciation of the time. Underground deposits permit the reconstruction of the history of these networks and their environment. The u th method and paleomagnetism provide ages in the early and middle Pleistocene. Sedimentology, mineralogy and the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility of detrital deposits are studied. Reshaping of weathered rocks and glacial sediments, notably varves, are the most typical. Corrosion in the temporarily phreatic zone plays a major part in the speleogenesis. The

This thesis addresses karst development in a terrain characterized by a highly complex geological and geomorphological evolution. It tackles the extent and complexity of both epigenic and hypogenic karst development, based on morphological analyses of caves, combined with analyses and datations of cave sediments and their correlation to regional geological and geomorphological evolution. Hypogenic karst registered is mainly the result of hydrothermal speleogenesis due to increased geothermal gradient in connection with nearby Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanic centers, with occurrence of sulfuric acid speleogenesis and ghost-rock weathering due to local geological or lithological control. Epigenic speleogenesis is strongly controlled by base level oscillations, with also examples of deep phreatic (now fossil) caves connected to regional base level rise, and per-ascensum speleogenesis. Another important finding is the constraining of the timing of Mariovo Lake draining in the Pleistocene, an important event in order to understand the geomorphological evolution in Macedonia, as it led to the onset of fluvial development and incision of valleys, shaping most of the present morphology

Histoire des paysages et de l'occupation humaine du massif des Calanques depuis 300 000 ans by Carole Romey( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Phd research work focuses on : (1) paleo-environment of the Calanques, (2) karst structure formation (polje of Cassis, SE France) and (3) Holocene environmental changes linked to human activities. The study is based on a multi-geophysical methods approach (electrical resistivity tomography, gravimetric, passive sismic survey) and on several sedimentary records studies. The main sedimentary record is 50 m-long core coming from a pleistocene paleolake located 2 km from the Mediterranean Sea. Limestone dissolution and/or cavity collapse led to the development of a polje, rapidly filled by the erosion of Aptian marls in glacial period. The connection between the polje and the three kilometer long Bestouan underwater karstic conduit with submarine outlet is strongly suggested by sedimentological studies and geophysical prospections. The Holocene environment is dominated by dry herbaceous formations. Human activities impact on the environment is visible through (1) local water network changes, (2) lead metallurgy activity and (3) agro-pastoral practices
