The nineteenth-century sonnet by Joseph Phelan ( Book )
6 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 612 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
What was the appeal of "the Sonnet's scanty plot of ground" to Romantic and Victorian poets? How did a form which had fallen into disuse in the early eighteenth century become a central and enduring part of nineteenth-century poetry? This study traces the history and development of the sonnet throughout the nineteenth century, examining the work of Wordsworth, Keats, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, George Meredith, and a number of other key canonical and non-canonical writers

The music of verse : metrical experiment in nineteenth-century poetry by Joseph Phelan ( Book )
9 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 190 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For most nineteenth-century poets and readers, the 'music' of verse was a vital part of the experience of reading poetry. Poets worked hard to create complex and delicate metrical structures which counterpointed the sense of the verse, and experimented with new forms designed to increase the expressive range and precision of poetry. We have, however, gradually lost the ability to hear this music, and with it our ability to understand and appreciate this element of nineteenth-century poetry. Through a detailed analysis of the theory and practice of metrical experiment in the work of poets as diverse as Southey, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Whitman, Patmore, Hopkins, and Alice Meynell, this study attempts to make the 'music' of verse audible once more, offering new readings of some of the canonical texts of the period, and restoring others which have been unjustly neglected to prominence
Clough--selected poems by Arthur Hugh Clough ( Book )
2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume presents a selection of Arthur Hugh Clough's poetry (1819-1861). Each poem is accompanied by detailed annotation which provides the modern reader with the intellectual, cultural, and historical information necessary for a full appreciation of the poet's work. A substantial critical introduction analyses the major themes and stylistic features of Clough's poetry, and attempts to place his work in the context of nineteenth-century poetry as a whole. The poems discussed span Clough's entire career, with new texts provided for all posthumously published works. The main focus of the book is on two of his most important poems, Amours de Voyage and Dipsychus and The Spirit. Each is discussed at length in the critical introduction and prefaced by a substantial headnote elucidating its historical background and literary antecedents
Robert Browning by Robert Browning ( Book )
3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Robert Browning (1812-1889) was one of the defining figures of the Victorian age. Famous in his lifetime for his runaway marriage to Elizabeth Barrett, his critical reputation grew steadily in the years following her early death. This selection, edited by leading scholars, reveals the innovation, complexity and profound psychological insight that have ensured Browning's enduring reputation and his continuing appeal to readers today." --Book Jacket
