Motherland and progress : Hungarian architecture and design 1800-1900 by J?ozsef Sisa( )

16 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 829 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the 19th century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents."Motherland and Progress" the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future
The architecture of historic Hungary( Book )

12 editions published in 1998 in 3 languages and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hungary's legacy of historic and modernist buildings rivals that of any country in Eastern or Western Europe. This comprehensive survey of Hungarian architecture from Roman times to the present, the first to be published in English, makes that case abundantly clear. But to appreciate the architectural history of this Central European country, it is necessary to understand architectural solutions indigenous to the Central European region as a whole. This book is both a study of the relationship between Hungary's own architecture and history, and an introduction to the larger field of Central European architecture."--Jacket
Lechner : a creative genius by József Sisa( Book )

11 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ödön Lechner (1845-1914), one of the greatest exponents of Hungarian architecture, and certainly its most original, deserves a prominent position in the international canon of extraordinary talents from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He is regarded by many as the creator of the Hungarian national style, the master of the Secession, one of the fathers of modern architecture, and even the Hungarian Gaudí. There is truth in all these statements, but the reality is far more complex."--Page 8
