Chinese Doctors in the Dutch East Indies. Social Mobility among an Ethnic Middleman Minority in a Colonial Society. The role of education in the social mobility of Chinese migrants' children in colonial Indonesia who trained in medical science in the 1930s and 1940s is described based on interviews with Chinese-Indonesian doctors (N = 20) born between 1910 and 1927 and now living in the Netherlands; statistical data on migration history and occupations are also utilized. It is found that income stability and occupational independence were the strongest motivations for pursuing a career in medicine. The success of these Chinese doctors in colonial Indonesia is discussed in relation to the social mobility of Chinese migrants in general. 2 Tables, 1 Appendix, 35 References. Z. Dubiel

Bourgeois neighbourhoods in nineteenth century Amsterdam. In contrast to many European cities Amsterdam has only a few nineteenth century bourgeois neighbourhoods. The reason is twofold: on the one hand the centre of Amsterdam with its formidable seventeenth and eighteenth century houses along the Heren- and Keizersgracht stayed for a long time a popular quarter for the local elite; on the other hand people moved to villa parks in nearby towns and villages. This was partly due to the high communal tax in Amsterdam. The article describes the plans and the developments of some neighbourhoods. One of these borders the Vondelpark and the owners of that park wished a quiet and aristocratic neighbourhood. Moreover, the earlier addresses of the occupants of the new houses during the first decades have been investigated as well as the social status of these occupants. Until the construction of these bourgeois neighbourhoods there was only a very restrictive residential segregation in Amsterdam; but afterwards the process of residential segregation can also be seen in Amsterdam, although it differs from cities as London and most American cities. Even today the centre of Amsterdam has not become a business quarter. It still is attractive as living quarter for well-to-do families where both partners earn a salary and which have no children
