A place called Chiapas by Nettie Wild( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army--made up of impoverished Mayan Indians from the state of Chiapas--took over five towns and 500 ranches in southern Mexico. The government deployed its troops, and at least 145 people died in the ensuing battle. Fighting for indigenous Mexicans to regain control over their lives and the land, the Zapatistas and their charismatic leader, guerilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, began sending their message to the world via the Internet. The result was what The New York Times called "the worldʼs first postmodern revolution." Years into the uprising, filmmaker Nettie Wild traveled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico to film the elusive and fragile life of the rebellion. Her camera effectively and movingly captures the personal stories behind a very public clash of traditional culture and globalization
Zapatista Encuentro : documents from the 1996 Encounter for Humanity and against Neoliberalism by Encuentro Intercontinental por la Humanidad y contra el Neoliberalismo( Book )

5 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why is everyone so quiet' Is this the democracy you wanted'" So ask the Zapatistas, the group of indigenous Mexicans who, on January 1, 1994, mounted a rebellion against the implementation of NAFTA, political corruption, and the slow, unreported genocide of indigenous people worldwide. As the group expressed their demands and revealed their tactics, it quickly became obvious that they were less an armed guerilla force seeking to seize state power, and much more a social movement seeking to catalyze civil society's full democratic power. For this reason Mexican political analyst Gustava Esteva has called the Zapatista rebellion "the first revolution of the 21st century." He explains that whereas the revolutions of the 20th century were tests for state power, the Zapatista struggle was for greater local autonomy, economic justice, and political rights within the borders of their own communities. Zapatista Encuentro contains documents and communiquEs from Subcomandante Marcos - the leader of the Zapatistas - from the 1996 Encounter for Humanity and Against Neoliberalism. This remarkable event brought together 5,000 activists from all over the world to discuss how globalization (neoliberalism) affects us politically, culturally, economically, and socially

Conversations with Durito : stories of the Zapatistas and neoliberalism by Marcos( Book )

6 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and Turkish and held by 114 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1994, from the Lacandon jungle, Zapatista Subcomandante Marcos replied to a ten-year-old girl in Mexico City who had sent him a drawing. In his response, Marcos conjured up a first fable introducing the beetle and knight-errant "Don Durito de la Lacandon." The ensuing output of Durito-related communiques and tales comprise a broad discourse of the Zapatistas' struggle, revealing their organizational history, their critique of traditional politics, and the reasons for their opposition to neoliberalism. These elements have helped make the Zapatistas an exemplary reference in the international movement against capitalist globalization. Conversations with Durito includes all the Durito stories issued to date, translated, annotated, and contextualized by the Accion Zapatista Editorial Collective, and illustrated by simpatico artists. Poetic, humorous, and imaginative, these fables provide an excellent introduction to the politics of globalization from the radical perspective of indigenous struggle."--Publisher's website
The Zapatistas' dignified rage : final public speeches of Subcommander Marcos by Marcos( Book )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For over two decades, Mexico's Zapatista indigenous movement has stood as a beacon of hope for activists around the world working against economic exploitation and government oppression. Subcommander Marcos was their military leader and spokesperson, a poetic advocate who was, for many, almost indistinguishable from the movement he championed. On May 25, 2014, in the town of La Realidad, deep in the Zapatistas' heartland, Subcommander Marcos delivered a speech before thousands of supporters in which he declared that he would henceforth "cease to exist," a change that made way for the movement's indigenous members to assume a more prominent role. Readers will find that speech in The Zapatistas' Dignified Rage, along with fourteen others he gave between the end of the "Other Campaign" in 2007 and his farewell announcement in 2014. While he made fewer public appearances during this period, he simultaneously increased the depth of his analysis. Collected here in English translation for the first time, these talks include some of his most explicit, detailed, and inspiring criticisms of capitalism, political parties, vanguards, electoral democracy, gender and racial discrimination, disingenuous solidarity, and much more. While others have voiced similar criticisms, Marcos was exceptional for also being a charismatic representative and spokesperson for a globally relevant social movement made up of tens of thousands of people
