Catholicism and politics in Argentina, 1810-1960 by Austen Ivereigh( Book )

11 editions published between 1925 and 1995 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A rare study of Catholicism in Latin-American politics prior to Vatican II, this work examines the role of Catholics and Catholic theology in the development of Argentine political history. The author challenges standard interpretations in arguing that Argentine authoritarianism derives principally from the Enlightenment offshoots of liberalism and popular nationalism. The author argues that the tension between these strains, and a broad humanistic cultural framework informed by the Catholic tradition, helps to explain Argentine political instability, while shedding new light on leaders and movements, and especially Peronism

"Catholic Voices is a new sort of apologetics. It gives Catholics a fresh way of explaining the Church's teaching on contentious issues ... It is the fruit of a group of speakers and experts brought together by a single idea: to make sure that Catholics and the Church were represented properly in the media when Pope Benedict came to visit the UK in September 2010"--Page 4 of cover

The great reformer playaway : Francis and the making of a radical pope by Austen Ivereigh( Recording )

1 edition published in 2014 in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Relying on extensive interviews in Argentina, Rome, and elsewhere, as well as years of study of the contemporary Catholic Church, The Great Reformer tells how Jorge Mario Bergoglio went from lower-middle-class child of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires to spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics worldwide. This intimate, far-reaching biography sheds light on the influence of Argentina's nationalist movement on Pope Francis and the inspiration provided by early Jesuit missionaries; his radical embrace of a Church for the poor; his visionary but controversial leadership of the Argentine Jesuits; as well as the hair-raising tightrope he walked during the military dictatorship of the 1970s
