The structure of enquiry in Plato's early Dialogues by Vasilis Politis( Book )

12 editions published between 2015 and 2018 in English and held by 258 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book proposes and defends a radically new account of Plato's method of argument and enquiry in his early dialogues. Vasilis Politis challenges the traditional account according to which these dialogues are basically about the demand for definitions, and questions the equally traditional view that what lies behind Plato's method of argument is a peculiar theory of knowledge. He argues that these dialogues are enquiries set in motion by dilemmas and aporiai, incorporating both a sceptical and an anti-sceptical dimension, and he contends that Plato introduces the demand for definitions, and the search for essences, precisely in order to avoid a sceptical conclusion and hold out the prospect that knowledge can be achieved"--
The aporetic tradition in ancient philosophy by George E Karamanolis( Book )

10 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ancient philosophers from an otherwise diverse range of traditions were connected by their shared use of aporia - translated as puzzlement rooted in conflicts of reasons - as a core tool in philosophical enquiry. The essays in this volume provide the first comprehensive study of aporetic methodology among numerous major figures and influential schools, including the Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch, Alexander of Aphrodisias, Academic sceptics, Pyrrhonian sceptics, Plotinus and Damascius. They explore the differences and similarities in these philosophers' approaches to the source, structure, and aim of aporia, their views on its function and value, and ideas about the proper means of generating such a state among thinkers who were often otherwise opposed in their overall philosophical orientation. Discussing issues of method, dialectic, and knowledge, the volume will appeal to those interested in ancient philosophy and in philosophical enquiry more generally
Critique of pure reason : a revised and expanded translation based on Meiklejohn by Immanuel Kant( Book )

6 editions published between 1993 and 2001 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The critique of pure reason : the critique of practical reason, and other ethical treatises : the critique of judgement by Immanuel Kant( Book )

8 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why this critique is called simply Critique of Practical Reason and not Critique of Pure Practical Reason, though the parallelism between it and the critique of speculative reason seems to demand the latter title, will be sufficiently shown in the treatise itself. Its task is merely to show that there is a pure practical reason, and, in order to do this, it critically examines reason's entire practical faculty. If it succeeds in this task, there is no need to examine the pure faculty itself to see whether it, like speculative reason, presumptuously overreaches itself. For if pure reason is actually practical, it will show its reality and that of its concepts in actions, and all disputations which aim to prove its impossibility will be in vain

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Voices of Wittgenstein brings together for the first time in both the original German and English translation over one hundred short essays in philosophical logic and the philosophy of mind of historical importance to understanding Wittgenstein's philosophical thought and development in the 1930s. It is the only substantial corpus of Wittgenstein's work that has remained relatively unknown and unavailable until now. Transcribed from the papers of Friedrich Waismann and dating from 1932-1935, the majority are highly important dictations by Wittgenstein to Waismann. The volume also includes texts of redrafted material by Waismann closely based on the dictations."--BOOK JACKET
