"Richard Bruce, a vacationing rich American, takes off in a London fog to find 'real English life' and wanders into a stranger's house, where he discovers a bloodied body in a chair. Startled, Richard runs into the street and bumps into passerby Gerald Fairfax. To Richard's surprise, when he returns to the house with Gerald, the body is gone and has been replaced by the very alive Major Thorne, who with his wife and niece, Rose Thorne, deny any mischief. Convinced that he is crazy, Rose, a Canadian who has just met her relatives for the first time, entertains Richard while they wait for the police. Later, Richard and she overhear the major and Gerald discussing the 'body' and then meet Jim Steele, the 'corpse,' in the library. Only wounded, Jim tells the couple that he is a secret service agent working with Scotland Yard to expose the major as a thieving imposter. Convinced by Steele's story, Richard and Rose agree to carry a special cigarette case to his contact, Regan, and consequently sneak onto the roof to make their escape. On the roof, they corner Holmes, a goodhearted burglar, who shows the couple how to climb down into a neighboring house. While pretending to be upper class party guests, Richard and Rose steal a general's expensive overcoat and hat for Holmes to wear as a disguise and lead him from the roof to safety. At the same time, Steele, who is actually a spy, tries to force the major to hand over plans for a new gun by threatening to expose certain letters that incriminate him as a traitor. Unaware that the cigarette case contains the major's letters, Richard hands it to Regan. After revealing his true identity, Regan gags and ties the couple and wraps Rose in a bag for shipment across the river. Freed by the tricky Holmes, who then substitutes himself for Rose, Richard waits for Regan and Steele and cleverly pits the two crooks against each other. In the fight that follows, the trio escapes with the case, and the police arrest the traitors"--AFI catalog, 1931-1940
