Modern taste : Art deco in Paris, 1910-1935 by Tim Benton( Book )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Modern taste: Art Deco in Paris, 1910-1935 offers readers an opportunity to appreciate, examine, assess and enjoy an artistic movement that defies easy definition but which has been described as "the last of the total styles": Art Deco. The book aims to question the almost total absence of Art Deco from the history of modern art and from curatorial practice, and to vindicate -- as some exemplary cases did in the wake of the Deco revival from the 1970s onwards -- not only the evident beauty of Art Deco but also the fascination exerted by this singularly modern phenomenon with all its cultural and artistic complexity. What we know as Art Deco was an alternative style to the avant-garde. It stood for a modernity that was pragmatic and ornamental rather than utopian and functional, and it became the great shaper of modern desire and taste, leaving its characteristic stamp on Western society and capitalism in the early decades of the 20th century. Comprehensive and beautifully designed, 'Modern taste' includes nearly 400 works in a wide array of media: painting, sculpture, furniture, fashion design, jewelry, film, architecture, glassware and ceramics are all represented, alongside the photography, drawings and advertisements that helped create "the modern taste." Exhibition: Fundacíon Juan March, Madrid, Spain (26.03-28.06.2015)
Futurist Depero : 1913-1950 by Fortunato Depero( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This gorgeous, clothbound, nearly 500-page volume presents a generous overview of one of the Futurist movement's most prolific and visionary figures. Fortunato Depero announced his allegiance to the Futurist cause with the manifesto "Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe" (coauthored with Giacomo Balla), and went on to attempt exactly that, traversing all disciplines, painting, sculpture, theatre and set design, poetry, graphic design, textiles and toy design, and infusing them with Futurism's joyous, energetic color palette and embrace of mechanization and speed. Depero was a pioneer in several fields: he created one of the first artist's museums, several classic artist's books (such as his famous "bolted book" of 1927) and the first artist's "factory," the Casa d'Arte Futurista in Rovereto, Italy, which produced toys, tapestries and furniture in the Futurist style. He was also very successful as a graphic designer, and his 1932 bottle design for Campari Soda is still in production. Surveying over 300 works from the gamut of his vast output, Futurist Depero is a wonderful, rich celebration of this fascinating Futurist protagonist"--amazon.com

Josef Albers : minimal means, maximum effect : March 28-July 6, 2014, Fundación Juan March by Josef Albers( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Surveying works in all media, Josef Albers: Minimum Media, Maximum Effect offers a new comprehensive monograph of Josef Albers (1888-1976) focusing on the artist's abiding concern for clarity and simplicity. As the title suggests, Albers strove to attain the maximum effect with minimal media. This selection of works demonstrates the continuity of Albers' austere and luminous vision, as it permeated his teaching, furniture and design objects, photography, typographical design and his writings, from his early years as a schoolteacher in Germany and the Bauhaus years to the end of his artistic and teaching career at Yale. His prolific artistic output ranged from furniture design and figurative line drawing to engraving and painting, including his renowned Homage to the Square. This substantial, 362-page survey is exhilarating in its scope, encompassing some 170 works, archival documents such as Albers' notes and journals, and dozens of essays and scholarly discourses on art, pedagogy and philosophy. This carefully designed volume illuminates Albers' artistry and teachings and allows the reader to appreciate the incredible technical skill and the clarity of vision behind his apparently simple works
Max Bill by Max Bill( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and Spanish and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A true Renaissance man with a clear, unified aesthetic vision, the Swiss artist, designer, architect and writer Max Bill combined the virtues of homo faber and homo ludens throughout his intensely productive career, launching the Concrete art movement and establishing himself as the single most decisive influence on postwar Swiss graphic design. This gorgeously designed, hefty volume--the most thorough Bill overview ever published in English, and the only monograph in print--presents Bill's oeuvre both chronologically and thematically, across every facet of his multifaceted oeuvre: painting, graphic art, sculpture, architecture, book and magazine design, industrial and furniture design, graphic design and advertising typography--from large-format posters to small inserts in periodicals--as well as his designs for exhibition spaces. Bill stands out for his enormous influence on Latin American geometric art (through his 1951 retrospective at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art), as well as for his essays, his work as an educator and his political and social concerns. All these aspects of his life and work are covered in this profusely illustrated catalogue, along with essays by scholars and a selection of previously unpublished essays by Bill himself."--

Genealogies of art, or, the history of art as visual art by Astrit Schmidt-Burkhardt( Book )

8 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With Alfred H. Barr, Jr.'s 1936 diagram of the flow of art in the twentieth century at its core, the exhibition Genealogies of Art, or the History of Art as Visual Art brings together visual representations of the history of art by artists and art historians, from the genealogical trees of the seventeenth century to today's visual online diagrams, including paintings, sketches, maps, plans, prints, drawings, diagrams, and information graphics. The resulting overview counterbalances the usual discursive presentations of art history and shows how the visual narratives that museums and exhibitions offer have true and irreplaceable meaning for that same history."--Back cover

William Morris y compañía : el movimiento arts and Crafts en Gran Bretaña by William Morris( Book )

13 editions published in 2017 in Spanish and Catalan and held by 41 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This exhibition offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the many faces of the designer, craftsman, retailer, poet, and social agitator William Morris (1834-1896), as well as those of the main figures in the Arts and Crafts movement. This new generation of architects, designers, artists and craftsmen, shared a passionate concern for the harmful effects of industrialization on society, working conditions and traditional British crafts. The movement promoted the widespread revival of handicrafts, honest, simple construction, and high quality materials, as both a philosophy for production and as a means of decorating the home. It also believed strongly in the attractions of the simple life and living close to nature. The questions that the movement raised about sustainable production, the balance between work and life, truth to materials, the beauty of the everyday object, and the preservation of historical buildings and the environment continue to resonate to this day. The show is organized in four chronological and thematic sections which feature 300 emblematic works, including furniture, textiles, wallpapers, jewellery, glass, ceramics, metalwork, book bindings, paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs. The first section is devoted to the Origins to Red House (1834-1860) with works by A.W.N. Pugin, John Ruskin, and other figures associated with the Gothic Revival. It also features works by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood such as D. G. Rossetti and E. Burne-Jones. The second section, William Morris and Company (1861-1896) is focused on objects produced and sold by the Morris company with an exploration of how they were made. Attention will also be drawn to Morris's commitment to conservation and socialism, and to the work of his printing house, the Kelmscott Press. A third section reviews The Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain (1887-1914), with works by C.R. Ashbee, M.H. Baillie Scott, Sidney Barnsley, W. Crane, E. Gimson, W.R. Lethaby, C. R. and M. M. Mackintosh, C.F.A. Voysey, P. Webb, and commercial suppliers such as Liberty and Heal's. The last section is dedicated to the The Spread of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1890-1914), with pieces that illustrate the connections between the British movement and its development in countries such as Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Spain and USA. Star objects include a vast hand-woven tapestry illustrating the legend of the Quest for the Holy Grail made by Morris & Co in the 1890s, an exquisite cabinet painted with images of rural life by Ernest Gimson, beautiful embroidery panels by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, and a large stained glass window by Frank Lloyd Wright. Almost all the works in the exhibition have never been seen in Spain before. A travelling exhibition, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona will host the show from 22 February to 21 May 2018.--www.march.es

Esteban Lisa : the abstract cabinet by Esteban Lisa( Book )

6 editions published in 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As its title suggests, this is a small, room-sized exhibition that deliberately focuses on a limited number of carefully-selected works. Accompanied by an equally-concise catalogue, it has been conceived in this reduced scale because the small format was a hallmark of Lisa's oeuvre, one that he repeatedly used throughout his life. This exhibition is also the first in a series of small-scale exhibitions seeking to provide an overview of leading figures in twentieth-century Latin American art within the broader context of the Fundación Juan March's collection of contemporary Spanish art and its exhibition program devoted to international modern and contemporary art. 00Exhibition: Museu Fundación Juan March, Palma, Spain (01.02.-20.05.2017) / Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, Cuenca, Spain (02.06.-03.09.2017) / The McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College, Boston, United States (15.09.-10.12.2017)

4 editions published in 2016 in Spanish and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

7 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in Spanish and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The avant-garde applied, 1890-1950 by Manuel Fontán del Junco( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

9 editions published in 2019 in Spanish and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
