The living wild by Art Wolfe( Book )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and German and held by 544 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nearly 400 photos taken by renowned nature photographer Wolfe capture more than 140 species of wildlife in their natural habitats. "A Ulysses for the New Millenium", Art Wolfe's personal odyssey started with a photograph of a Florida panther, one of North America's rarest animals (less than 50 remaining in the wild), & ended over three years later with a photograph of a polar bear cub fresh from the den, taking its first tentative steps on spring snow. The journey to capture on film the world's most spectacular animals took him four times around the world (in a lot more than 80 days each time) & to every continent (most more than once) & over 40 different countries including Mongolia three times (without ever seeing the snow leopard he sought). However, the Bornean bay cat, never before photographed alive, did not escape his lens! His travels also included most every means imaginable: safari vehicle, horse, camel, kayak, helicopter, private & commercial jet, ultra-light, dugout canoe, elephant, fins with scuba tank, and, of course, on foot. Despite 25 years of photographing in the wild, Art compiled a list of personal firsts during this mission: learning to scuba dive-in the frigid Puget Sound in October-in order to photograph humpback whales in Tonga & great white sharks in South Africa, photographing tigers, jaguars & cougars in the wild, & visiting countries like India & Iceland. The less intrepid explorer can experience it all in Art's premier book, The Living Wild. Together the more than 140 different species, worthy of a Noah's Ark, present the case for just how much is at stake, why we should care enough to act, & why there really is reason for hope
