Professional Development through a Teacher Book Club by Carol Marra Pelletier( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper describes the development of a teachers' book club as a form of professional development, based on the premise that teachers are leaders and can be responsible for their own professional development, if given a framework and opportunity to do so. Data sources included a survey and interviews with club members. Analysis of the success of the book club revealed four major contributing factors: (1) leadership style; (2) the environment in which the group held their discussions, including its physical space and the group climate; (3) the group members themselves, who included teachers of all grade levels and disciplines; and (4) integration of the book club into the teachers' daily routine. It was also felt that the club's success was due to the fact that teachers themselves selected the club as a professional development activity and made the commitment to it. The paper concludes that teacher conversations about teaching and learning should be promoted and links from theory to practice should be created. The reading list for the book club is appended, as well as a form for evaluating professional development activities. (Jdd)

Teacher Portfolio: Reflection in Action. Part 1 and Part 2. anAlternative to Traditional Teacher Evaluation; and Creating TeacherPortfolios. the Dallin School Project by Carol Marra Pelletier( Book )

2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Part 1 of this paper inquires into how teachers can use portfolios in professional development; part 2 takes one component, a review of the contents of a portfolio, and puts it into action with practicing teachers and student teachers. Part 1 focuses on a teacher evaluation model that includes working with a peer, while part 2 focuses on the portfolio as a professional growth experience to be shared with a student teacher, emphasizing portfolios as a valuable tool for teacher evaluation and an opportunity for teachers to reflect on their own practices. The proposed model calls for the teacher to develop a portfolio in conjunction with review by a partner. Although contents of the portfolio would be up to the teacher, it should contain something indicative of the teacher's educational philosophy, an aspect that includes journal or reflective entries, and an indication of professional development by documenting reading, courses, or presentations. The workshops described in part 2 took teachers to the Boston (Massachusetts) area through development of a portfolio. Teachers responded favorably and presented completed portfolios. One diagram represents the model. Attachments include some framing documents for the portfolio. (Contains three references.) (Sld)
A Handbook of Techniques and Strategies for Coaching Student Teachers. aGuide for Cooperating Teachers, Mentors, College Supervisors, andTeacher Educators. a Longwood Professional Book by Carol Pelletier Radford( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This book provides guidelines and suggestions for cooperating teachers and others who find themselves supervising student teachers. Each chapter begins with an overview and is then divided into sections focusing on planning, acting, and reflecting processes within the chapter's overall scope. Forms and worksheets are provided to facilitate both the actual teaching and supervisory processes as well as reflections by both the student teacher and his or her supervisor on the issues addressed in each chapter. Section 1 includes nine chapters on building a solid working relationship between the student teacher and cooperating faculty, including suggestions for team-building activities. Topics range from the first meeting and designing of effective lesson plans to supervision techniques and conferencing with the student teacher. Section 2 is designed to be a resource base for topics student teachers should have studied in methods courses but may still need to review during student teaching. Essentials of classroom management, classroom discipline, and student assessment are covered. Section 3 focuses on culminating the student teaching experience, and includes chapters on evaluating student teacher performance and planning activities for a sense of closure. A chapter on miscellaneous other important issues is included, addressing legal issues, substitute teaching, guidelines for referring students, teachers unions and professional associations, and including special education students in regular education settings. Section 4 consists of a single concluding chapter on reviewing and reflecting on the practicum experience. Forms in this section provide opportunities to review the overall experience and establish goals for future practicum work. (Pb)
