Fungi in ecosystem processes by John Dighton( Book )

20 editions published between 2003 and 2021 in English and held by 548 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Designed for graduate students and researchers, Dighton's (Rutgers U.; Institute of Marine and Coastal Science, New Brunswick) text summarizes the vast literature on fungi, with some 1300 references cited. The author begins with and then builds upon the list of functions fungi perform in ecosystems, as suggested by Alan Rayner in The Fungal Community: Its Structure and Function (Marcel Dekker, 1992), including the role of fungi in soil formation, plant primary production, sustenance of secondary producers, and regulation of plant and animal populations and communities. He also demonstrates how the world would function less satisfactorily in the absence of fungi. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
The Fungal community : its organization and role in the ecosystem( Book )

12 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 428 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

(Publisher-supplied data) Bridging the gap between ecological concepts and mycology, The Fungal Community: Its Organization and Role in the Ecosystem, Third Edition addresses many of the questions related to the observations, characterizations, and functional attributes of fungal assemblages and their interaction with the environment and other organisms. This edition promotes awareness of the functional methods of classification over taxonomic methods and approaches the concept of fungal communities from an ecological rather than a fungicentric perspective. New material examines issues of global and local biodiversity, the problems associated with exotic species, and the debate concerning diversity and function
Interactions in soil : promoting plant growth by John Dighton( )

17 editions published in 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 376 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book investigates soil ecology and biodiversity for its ability to maintain a balance of beneficial organisms to support plant growth. This subject is discussed by a group of international authors in natural, agricultural and urban systems
The fungal community : its organization and role in the ecosystem by John Dighton( )

28 editions published between 2005 and 2021 in English and Undetermined and held by 242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In all subjects in science new findings and use of new technologies allow us to develop an ever-greater understanding of our world. With the evolution of molecular tools for identifying fungi and genomics to understand relationships between fungal species, the entire concept of fungal taxonomy has been changed from classical Linnean nomenclature to that of bar codes and robust multi-gene phylogenetic molecular trees (Hibbett and Taylor 2013, Money 2013). These tools allow us to ask new questions in relation to the evolution of the kingdom Fungi and the major taxa within. Along with this surge, the development of molecular tools in the application of genomics, metagenomics and transcriptomics has allowed us to understand more about the functional aspects of fungi in real time (Martin 2014). Fungi interact with all components of the ecosystems on earth, but do not act alone. Different fungi interact with each other and with other organisms in both trophic and non-trophic interactions. They also interact with abiotic components of ecosystems and with pollutants that humans produce (Dighton 2016). Indeed, interaction of fungi with humans has led to a whole new area of study of 'the built environment' as an ecosystem where fungi are under stress and have evolved to survive (Gostincar et al. 2011) and cause concern over human health and the integrity of their belongings

Fungi in ecosystem processes by John Dighton( Book )

3 editions published between 2016 and 2018 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new edition of Fungi in Ecosystem Processes continues the unique approach of examining the roles of fungi from the perspective of ecosystem functions. It explores how fungi have adapted to survive within particular constraints, how they help to maintain homeostasis in ecosystems, how they facilitate resistance to perturbations, and how they influence the communities of other organisms.Updated and revised, the second edition Expands the section on plant pathogens, invasive species, and insect-fungal interactionsProvides more extensive coverage on insect-fungal interactions, including entomopathogens, the links between entomopathogens and endophytes, and symbiotic and mutualistic interactionsAdds a new section on fungi in the built environmentPresents new material on below-ground to above-ground interactions mediated through fungi, such as mycorrhizal signaling systems for herbivory defenseThe book also includes expanded coverage of the role of fungi in suppressive soils, aquatic and marine fungi, modern methods of following food chains in fungal-invertebrate trophic interactions, and the physiology of nutrient uptake by mycorrhizae.A necessary update and expansion to previous material, this book provides an essential reference on the current understanding of fungal roles in ecosystem processes. It also identifies directions for future study, including an emphasis on the need for further research on fungi in built environments

Nutrient and carbon dioxide release by interacting species of straw-decomposing fungi by Charles H Robinson( )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pairs of fungi were incubated on wheat straw in microcosms tor 10 weeks. Release of Na+, K+ and NH4+-N was similar from all combinations, but Ca2+, Mg2+ and PO43--P release depended on the species. In Agrocybe gibberosa/Chaetomium globosum and Sphaerobolus stellatus/Chaetomium globosum combinations, there was evidence of interactions which suppressed the predicted rate of phosphate release, and in all the mixed species combinations there were interactions which increased the rate of fungal respiration above that of the more combative fungus in pure culture
