The international history of East Asia, 1900-1968 : trade, ideology and the quest for order by Antony Best( Book )

18 editions published between 2007 and 2012 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides a broad account of the international history of East Asia from 1900 to 1968 - a subject that is essential to any understanding of the modern epoch. Whereas much of the scholarship on this subject has focused purely on the immediate origins and consequences of violent events such as wars and revolutions, this book demonstrates the importance of also considering other forces such as ideology, trade and cultural images that have helped shape East Asian international history. It analyses how the development of the region was influenced by ideological competition and 'orientalism', by both multilateral and unilateral efforts to instil order, and by the changing nature of international trade. It considers a number of important topics such as the concept of the 'open door'; the rise and influence of progressive internationalism in the forum of the League of Nations; the development of anti-colonial nationalism and anti-Western internationalism in the shape of pan-Asianism; and the onset of the Cold War. It also includes detailed case studies of subjects including the administration of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service; the international effort to regulate the trade in opium; and the significance of intra-Asian trade. Overall, this book constitutes an impressive account of the international history of East Asia, and is an important contribution to the interpretive study of this crucial period of history
British intelligence and the Japanese challenge in Asia, 1914-1941 by Antony Best( Book )

8 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first comprehensive study of the role played by British intelligence in influencing policy towards Japan from the period of the Great War, when the future of the Anglo-Japanese alliance first came into question, to the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941. Using many previously classified records from the British and Australian national archives, it describes how the image of Japan generated by intelligence during this period led Britain to abrogate the alliance, to eschew a policy of appeasement in the 1930s and fatally to underestimate Japanese military capabilities in 1941. The book shows how this image was derived from racially driven assumptions about Japanese 'national characteristics', and how British intelligence-gathering was hampered by rivalries within Whitehall and a lack of adequate financial resources and personnel."--BOOK JACKET

Britain's retreat from empire in East Asia, 1905-80( )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The decline of British power in Asia, from a high point in 1905, when Britain's ally Japan had vanquished the Russian Empire, apparently reducing the perceived threat that Russia posed to British interests in India and China, to the end of the twentieth century, when British power had dwindled to virtually nothing, is one of the most important themes in understanding the modern history of East and Southeast Asia. This book considers a range of issues that illustrate the significance and influence of the British Empire in Asia and the nature of Britain's imperial decline. Subjects covered include the challenges posed by Germany and Japan during the First World War, British efforts at international co-operation in the interwar period, the British relationship with Korea and Japan in the wake of the Second World War, and the complicated path of decolonisation in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong"--Provided by publisher

British engagement with Japan, 1854-1922 : the origins and course of an unlikely alliance by Antony Best( )

7 editions published between 2020 and 2021 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book by a leading authority on Anglo-Japanese relations reconsiders the circumstances which led to the unlikely alliance of 1902 to 1922 between Britain, the leading world power of the day and Japan, an Asian, non-European nation which had only recently emerged from self-imposed isolation. Based on extensive original research the book goes beyond existing accounts which concentrate on high politics, strategy and simple assertions about the two countries' similarities as island empires. It brings into the picture cultural factors, particularly the ways in which Japan was portrayed in Britain, and ambivalent British attitudes to race and supposed European superiority which were overcome but remained difficulties. It charts how the relationship developed as events unfolded, including Japan's wars against China and Russia, and in addition looks at royal diplomacy, where the Japanese Court came eventually to be treated as a respected equal. Overall, the book provides a major reassessment of this important subject
