L'hypocondriaque, ou, Le mort amoureux : tragi-comédie (1631) by Jean Rotrou( Book )

12 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in French and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Resisting Power, Subverting Discourse : Genre, Reception, and Womens Subjectivation in Marguerite de Navarres Heptamron by Theresa Brock( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

My dissertation analyzes a previously neglected, yet essential, element of Marguerite de Navarres Heptamron (1558): its political agenda. While scholars have discussed the texts protofeminist leanings, no one has analyzed how its treatment of womens intellectual, corporeal, and spiritual life encourages the reform of patriarchal institutions. I contend that the text challenges masculine preeminence in the Church and aristocracy through recurring tales of attempted rape, in which self-interested men assert subjectivity and dominance by objectifying women. To contest the reduction of women to sexualized bodies, female storytellers foreground the faith and intelligence of the rapists intended victims. In so doing, they redefine female experience in spiritual and intellectual terms and thus affirm female subjectivity. Moreover, in the post-tale debates, the female narrators assert their right to be seen as subjects by echoing their heroines resistance to masculine aggression. When male storytellers propose interpretations of rape that laud masculine self-interest, the women use Scripture and critical thinking to unravel their arguments. In place of a selfish, power-driven mentality that incites hostility between the sexes, the female narrators endorse a Christlike relational standard called agape. As they attempt to convert their male interlocutors to this new paradigm, they also aim to recruit readers to their cause. The text aids them in that effort by manipulating readers generic expectations, acquired from the Heptamrons male-authored inspirations and the lighthearted genres with which they engage. By redirecting readers toward moral discussions with political import, the text begins a process of disorientation. It continues to disorient the reader through the myriad opinions the storytellers express before employing textual signposts to invite the reader to join the devisantes community. By altering individual perspectives, the text works to reform the Church and aristocracy and gain recognition for female subjectivity
