Aristophanes' Lysistrata by Gilbert Seldes( Book )

Lysistrata is a comedy by Aristophanes. Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BCE, it is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end The Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace - a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society

Lysistrata by Gilbert Seldes( Book )

In Lysistrata, Aristophanes has dealt with two themes, war and sexual love. This classic comedy -- from the 5th century BC -- concerns the vow of Greek women to withhold sex from their husbands until the men agree to end the disastrous wars between Athens and Sparta. For twenty-one years, while Athens was engaged in a war to make the world safe for Athenian democracy, Aristophanes relentlessly and wittily attacked the war, the ideals of the war, the war spirit and the war party. At intervals of two years, he wrote three plays attacking the war, and ten years later he returned to the attack in the present masterpiece. - Introduction
