11 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in English and held by 1,364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

''An enormous amount of academic literature has been published on Nasserism since the 1950s and, to my mind, Rethinking Nasserism is without a doubt the last word on the subject. ... An outstanding reappraisal of Nasserism as a major force in the 20th-century Middle East
The politics of national celebrations in the Arab Middle East by Elie Podeh( )

16 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 673 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why do countries celebrate defining religious moments or significant events in their history, and how and why do their leaders select certain events for commemoration and not others? This book is the first systematic study of the role of celebrations and public holidays in the Arab Middle East from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the present. By tracing the history of the modern nation-state through successive generations, the book shows how Arab rulers have used public holidays as a means of establishing their legitimacy and, more broadly, a sense of national identity. Most recently, some states have attempted to nationalize religious festivals in the face of the Islamic revival. With its many illustrations and copious examples from across the region, the book offers an alternative perspective on the history and politics of the Middle East"--Provided by publisher

Chances for peace : missed opportunities in the Arab-Israeli conflict by Elie Podeh( )

3 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 639 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Drawing on a newly developed theoretical definition of "missed opportunity." Chances for Peace uses extensive sources in English, Hebrew, and Arabic to systematically measure the potentiality levels of opportunity across some ninety years of attempted negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict. With enlightening revelations that defy conventional widsom, this study provides a balanced account of the most significant attempts to forge peace, initiated by the world's superpowers, the Arabs (including the Palestinians), and Israel. From Arab-Zionist negotiations at the end of World War I to the subsequent partition, the aftermath of the 1967 War and the Sadat Initiative, and numerous agreements throughout the 1980s and 1990s, concluding with the Annapolis conference in 2007 and the Abu Mazen-Olmert talks in 2008, pioneering scholar Elie Podeh uses empirical criteria and diverse secondary sources to assess the protagonists' roles at more than two dozen key junctures. A resource that brings together historiography, political science, and the practice of peace negotiation, Podeh's insightful exploration also showcases opportunities that were not missed. Three agreements in particular (Israeli-Egyptian, 1979; Israeli-Lebanese, 1983; and Israeli-Jordanian, 1994) illuminate important variables for forging new paths to successful negotiation. By applying his framework to a broad range of power brokers and time periods, Podeh also sheds light on numerous incidents that contradict offical narratives. An ambitious work that will stir debate while inspiring new applications of a lens that defines, measures, and applies the missed opportunity concept, this unique book is poised to reshape the realm of conflict resolution"--Jacket

The research is based on archival material located in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Israel, as well as all the available sources in Arabic. The use of these primary sources allows for a fresh look at the UAR forty years after its establishment."--Jacket
The quest for hegemony in the Arab world : the struggle over the Baghdad Pact by Elie Podeh( Book )

11 editions published in 1995 in English and German and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The struggle between Egypt and Iraq over Arab hegemony constitutes the main theme of this study. Focussing on the struggle over Middle Eastern defense between 1945-58, and culminating in the conflict over the Baghdad Pact (1955-58), it sheds new light on Arab politics during the period under review. This research concentrates predominantly on the regional actors. The underlying assumption is that policies were not necessarily formulated in Washington and London, and that - often enoughmajor decisions taken in Ankara, Cairo, Baghdad, Damascus, Amman and other Arab capitals affected decision-makers in Western capitals. The Quest for Hegemony in the Arab World is based on newly-released British, American and Israeli documents, as well as on all available Arab sources. The study's value rests upon its discussion of the Baghdad Pact, a significant event which was hitherto neglected, yet marked a watershed in modern Arab history. This study's approach offers an analytical framework with which the present struggle for hegemony in the Arab world may be examined
Multiple alterities : views of others in textbooks of the Middle East by Elie Podeh( )

14 editions published between 2017 and 2019 in English and Undetermined and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Highlights and examines the role of the textbook in legitimising established political and social orders. It analyses the way in which the 'other' is presented in school textbooks, focusing on a number of countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and argues that the role of textbooks in developing and maintaining a national identity should be afforded greater critical attention. Textbooks can help form national identities by developing a society's collective memory; this might involve a historical narrative which may be self-contradictory or even fabricated to a certain extent, including myths, symbols and collective memories that divide 'us' from 'them', and ultimately resulting a dichotomy between the Self and the Other

From Fahd to ʻAbdallah : the origins of the Saudi peace initiatives and their impact on the Arab system and Israel by Elie Podeh( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Abstract: This article presents a comparative analysis of two Saudi Arabian peace initiatives: the Fahd Plan (1981) and the ʻAbdallah Plan (2002). These plans aroused considerable political and public debate in the Arab world, and were ultimately ratified, with some modification, at Arab summit meetings. However, they did not have the same impact in Israel. The article examines both the factors that motivated the Saudi elite to propose these initiatives and the responses to them of the Arab countries, Israel, and the US."
