Challenging genetic determinism : new perspectives on the gene in its multiple environments by Royal Society of Canada( )

10 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 1,539 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Advances in genetic research have captured the attention of the media and the public through reports about genetically caused diseases and behaviours. However, all too often the coverage of scientists' innovations has implied that genetic factors alone are responsible for effects ranging from personality and sexual preferences to morbid obesity and intellectual disabilities. This book argues that hypotheses cannot be based solely on genetic factors but must take into account the context in which these factors occur. Reviewing a century of developments in understanding the interplay of genes and environments, contributors demonstrate the importance of considering contextual influences as well as genetic factors and provide a comprehensive method for understanding recent research findings. The compelling new findings presented here highlight how personality traits, complex diseases and behaviours, and social and ethical issues, are all related to the interaction of genes and the environment
Leading research universities in a competitive world by Robert Lacroix( )

18 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 1,018 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although research universities represent only fifteen to twenty per cent of national university systems worldwide, they provide the bulk of fundamental research and doctoral training. Written by two veteran university administrators, Leading Research Universities in a Competitive World focuses on the international ranking systems' uneven distribution of these institutions in industrialized countries, and the organizational factors affecting their efficacy, prestige, and performance. Robert Lacroix and Louis Maheu argue that research universities, despite being embedded within academia's mindset and rules, have to master market influences and relationships in order to produce new knowledge and attract the rare talent and limited financial assets required for successful research and education activities. Comparing the configuration of higher education systems in the US, UK, France, and Canada, the authors outline the ways in which research universities, which need public funding and have to engage diverse forms of state regulation, may possess sufficient autonomy to behave as independent actors. They demonstrate that reaching an equilibrium between autonomy and state regulation, though challenging, is an essential element in the success of high performing research universities. Leading Research Universities in a Competitive World illuminates the operation of these institutions through substantive quantitative and qualitative datasets to address the fundamental question of why universities perform differently.--

12 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book assembles an international cast of eminent contributors who focus on issues of social movements and social class from the perspective of collective action. An important addition to current debate, the text discusses such topics as: middle-class radicalism, racism, class, the institutionalization of movements, urban politics, citizenship, education and democracy." "Social Movements and Social Classes asks how integrative and expansive collective action is in the constitution of modern societies, and how we can articulate issues of collective action, social movement practices and class action within this integrative understanding." "An original contribution to the understanding of social movements, social classes and collective action, this book will be essential reading for academics and students of sociology, political science, urban studies, cultural studies and ethnic studies."--Jacket
