Éthique by Benedictus de Spinoza( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in Dutch and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Utopia 1516-2016 : More's eccentric essay and its activist aftermath by J. A. van Ruler( Book )

7 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This year marks the five-hundredth anniversary of Thomas More's widely influential book Utopia, and this volume brings together a number of scholars to consider the book, its long afterlife, and specifically its effects on political activists over the centuries. In addition to thorough studies of Utopia itself, and appraisals of More's relationship with Erasmus, the book presents detailed studies of the effect of Utopia on early modern England and the Low Countries, as well as philosophical reflections on ideology and the utopian mind, and much more.

1 edition published in 2014 in Dutch and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Angelo Poliziano's Lamia : text, translation, and introductory studies by Angelo Poliziano( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1492, Angelo Poliziano published his Lamia, a praelectio, or opening oration to a course he would teach that academic year on Aristotles Prior Analytics at the Florentine university. Having heard murmurings that he was not philosopher enough to teach the Aristotelian text, Poliziano strikes back, offering in effect a fable-tinted history of philosophy even as he strikes back at his presumed detractors. More than a repudiation of local gossip, the text, framed by fables, represents a rethinking of the mission of philosophy. This volume offers the first English translation, an edition of the
Nicolaus Cusanus on faith and the intellect : a case study in 15th-Century Fides-Ratio Controversy by K. M Ziebart( Book )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, K.M. Ziebart argues convincingly that Cusanus' epistemology was a direct response to late-medieval debates over the relation between faith and reason-one which sought to resolve these debates by introducing a controversially strong integration of philosophy and theology. By examining his works in the context of debates with his peers, Ziebart shows how and why Cusanus came to articulate a theory of knowledge in which faith is posited as inherent to the very structure of mind, as the 'vis iudiciaria', or power of judgment. This well-grounded study sheds new light on the Cusan philosophy and expands our view of a crucial, liminal period in European intellectual history

Arnold Geulincx "Ethics" : with Samuel Beckett's notes( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Arnold Geulincx (1624-1669) is a key figure in the history of ideas, whose concepts have been seen as precursors to those developed by Spinoza, Malebranche, Leibniz and Kant. His "Ethics" presents a treatment of virtue from the standpoint of occasionalist metaphysics. The great Irish writer Samuel Beckett stated that Geulincx, with his emphasis on the powerlessness and ignorance of the human condition, was a key influence on his works. This is the first complete version of the text to appear in a modern language. It includes the full text of the "Ethics" and Beckett's notes to his reading of Geulincx. Shedding new light on important moments of intellectual history, it is a major event for students of philosophy and literature
